The $86,000 project, recommended by the Eagle Point Weapons Safety Committee, was started in July and completed in late November. The school, which includes a primary (kindergarten through second grade) and intermediate (third through fifth grade) campus, was partially fenced, but the front was wide-open, said Principal Ginny Walker. As a result, the school dealt with vandalism, people wandering about, bicyclists cutting through the campus and transients sleeping in the breezeways. Now all the classroom buildings, gym, cafeteria, libraries, playground and bus loading zones are enclosed. Parents can still drop off their children as usual, but after school starts the only way to enter the school is by the front office on the primary side of the campus, formerly known as White City Elementary, said Human Resources Director Allen Barber Students walking to school in the morning can still enter the campus through gates that are locked after school begins. “I think in the beginning parents were nervous about having less access, but what they are realizing now and are telling us is that they can still drop off their kids in the morning and access the campus through many gates,” Walker said.
