With a record 1,822 adoptions in 2015 — surpassing the previous record of 1,410 in 2013 — SOHS Executive Director Kenn Altine says the shelter's supplies have been depleted. Especially needed are blankets during the cold winter months. Altine says blankets typically are washed and re-used but must be thrown away when they wear out, are used by sick dogs or are chewed up by anxious, stressed-out animals. Cold, muddy conditions and an increase of the number of dogs coming through the shelter have contributed to a short supply of blankets, Altine says. "We cut a lot of the large blankets in half to get more, leaving us with very few large blankets at a time when we have a lot of large dogs," Altine says. "Each dog has two blankets on its bed. For large dogs, who do not have indoor kennels, we add two more dog blankets to their Dogloos. Any wet blanket is replaced immediately. Dirty blankets get replaced as needed. Heavily soiled blankets, especially those from dogs with intestinal problems, get thrown away." Altine says blankets need not be pet-specific. Donations of regular human blankets work just as well or better, he says. Fleece blankets are ideal, as they are lightweight, dry quickly and provide plenty of warmth, he says. Stadium-style and quilted/padded blankets are too heavy for the shelter's washing machines. Anything with padding cannot be used because the dogs tear up and swallow the padding, Altine says. Those with blankets to donate may drop them off at the shelter, which is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford.
