The Black Tornado sprinkled its lineup with freshmen and sophomores but still came away with boys and girls wins over the Grizzlies. North’s boys defeated Ashland, 85-59, while the girls easily won, 96-39. "We rested a lot of kids to get ready for district and overcome some injuries," North Medford coach Mark Hodges said. "So we put a lot of young bodies on the track today in varsity positions, and they really came through and competed well." In boys, the Black Tornado received winning performances from freshman Almeir Barlow (200) and Thomas Gilstrap (pole vault). Among the younger North girls who came up big were sophomores Sara Weeks (100, 300 hurdles) and Haylee Godfrey (200) and freshmen Jana Parker (400) and Ashley Chambers (high jump, long jump). Weeks produced a season-best mark in the 100 (12.7). Advertisement "It definitely makes (Weeks) a conference contender," said Hodges. "She’ll be right in the mix." North veterans Steve Johnson (discus, shot put), Josh Casebere (long jump, triple jump) and Sam Heim (discus, shot put) on the girls’ side also produced. "I was pretty pleased with our marks," said Hodges. "We had a little pep in our step." Freshman Jordan Kling highlighted Ashland’s efforts with a personal-record 17-6 mark in the long jump. CRATER, SOUTH MEDFORD SPLIT — At Central Point, Isaac Stoutenburgh set a school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:59.59 and boosted the Crater boys to victory. The 1,500 mark is the second school record set by Stoutenburgh over the past week. On Saturday, he set a standard in the 3,000. Crater’s Adam Goff pulled off a trifecta, leading the pack in the pole vault (13-6), 110 hurdles (15.64), and the 300 hurdles (41.48). Nick Nutting also shined for the Comets, winning the triple jump (41-6½ ) and 100 (11.69). Kaylyn Knutson, April Bradshaw and Jan Frodsham each won two events for the South Medford girls. Crater’s Myriah McMillin improved upon her season-best mark in the discus with a toss of 125-8. Terry Hodder earned first in the boys long jump and the 400 meters, while Graham Doody raced to wins in the 800 and 1,500 for the Cavemen. Eagle Point’s Jake Olson beat out Grants Pass thrower Tyler Dungey in the shot put and discus. Kylee Willard won the girls triple jump and 100 hurdles for the Cavemen, while the Eagles’ Janna Boren showed her versatility by placing first in the 100 and pole vault.
