The senior also helped the Comets to a 4-3 record in the SOC and a Class 4A state playoff berth. Crater’s LaFontaine tabbed SOC’s top player By ROB McCALLUM Mail Tribune It would have been hard to deny Sarah LaFontaine the Southern Oregon Conference’s Player of the Year award. The Crater senior earned the conference’s top award after leading the SOC in scoring with 20 goals. LaFontaine also led the Comets to a 4-3 record and a Class 4A state tournament berth. Crater was eliminated in a first-round playoff loss on Saturday, 5-0 to Oregon City. "She means an awful lot to this team," said Crater coach Terry Fretz. "Obviously, in the scoring department, but she’s also crucial in the assist department." Advertisement LaFontaine will leave Crater as the team’s leading scorer for each of the past four seasons. She is also receiving interest from several colleges. "She’ll definitely end up playing somewhere," Fretz said. "It’s just a matter which route she wants to take." LaFontaine makes her third straight appearance on the SOC first team after earning second-team honors as a freshman. Teammate Kasidy Reina joined LaFontaine on the first team. After leading Grants Pass to a 6-1 record in the SOC, Hector Cruz was named coach of the year. "I’m definitely honored by all of our coaches," Cruz said. "Some of these coaches have been around for a long time and they have built great programs. To receive praise from them is something special." The award is Cruz’s second in eight years at Grants Pass. Conference champion South Medford placed three players on the first team, led by junior midfielder Kelsey Corbin, a unanimous choice for the first team. Seniors Savannah Madsen and Courtney Quinowski also made the first team for the Panthers. North Medford also landed three on the first team. Midfielders Kadi Driver and Caitlin Seeley and goalkeeper Amber Withol each made their first appearances on the first team. Grants Pass had the youngest member of the first team in sophomore Megan Franko. "Megan has a great work ethic and is a workhorse for us," Cruz said of his team’s leading scorer. "She’s very coachable. I’m glad she’s only a sophomore." Eagle Point coach Tim Sweeney received a coaches commendation award for his efforts in coaching both the boys and girls teams.
