Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 19, 2005 Mustangs erupt for playoff triumph NORTH BEND — After struggling early, Hidden Valley came roaring back with 35 second-half points in the 41-19 Class 3A state-playoff victory over North Bend on Friday. Hidden Valley will make its first quarterfinal appearance since 1998 against the winner of today’s game between Marist and Burns. Hidden Valley fell behind early after North Bend completed a 62-yard slant that took the Bulldogs down to the 5-yard line. Kale Forrester rushed in on the next play. North Bend then struck again after Austin Nicholls returned a partially blocked 16-yard field goal attempt 91 yards for the score. Ryan VanCleave got the Mustangs on the board with a 9-yard run in the second-quarter, but the Bulldogs returned the favor just before the half, taking a 19-6 lead. But that’s as far as North Bend would get. Advertisement Hidden Valley rallied after the break behind a strong running game and stifling defense to score 35 unanswered points. Matt Musselman led the charge after recovering a fumble in the end zone, followed by another VanCleave score to put the Mustangs ahead 20-19. "We got a lot of confidence in the second half and absolutely unleashed on them," said coach Jim Figoni. Hidden Valley poured it on in the fourth quarter after Sam Dollarhide provided a 55-yard scoring run and Dustin Mathews returned an interception 17 yards for the score. Dollarhide, who finished with 252 yards on 35 carries, capped the offensive onslaught with an 8-yard touchdown. Despite the victory, Figoni knows that his team can’t afford to make those same early mistakes again. "We’re at a point in the season where the mistakes we’ve gotten away with, we can’t make anymore," said Figoni. On the first play from scrimmage, North Valley quarterback Nate Ellis hurled a 56-yard pass to Jordan Makepeace to set up a Kyle Buth 2-yard touchdown run. Sherwood’s Austin Snow answered on the ensuing kickoff with an 82-yard touchdown return to tie the game 7-all. After a pair of long Sherwood (11-0) runs for scores, Ellis caught a 6-yard touchdown pass on a halfback sweep pass by Tim Stickler. Ellis, who was 8-for-17 for 162 yards passing, tied the game at 21-all on an 11-yard run in the third. The Knights, the Skyline Conference’s No. 2 seed, finish the season at 8-3.
