LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, March 4 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 4, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Mar. 4, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Messing with nature Some time ago, I was picking mushrooms in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. As I moved through the woods, I noticed that I had a spotted owl for company. Each time that I set my mushroom bucket down, the spotted owl would land in the tree above the bucket. The owl showed no fear of humans. Its focus was on the bucket. Soon I had more company. A woman in a government uniform approached me, and she also had a bucket. Hers contained mice. She fed the owl mice from her bucket! Thus, the spotted owl's lack of fear of humans and the owl's interest in my mushroom bucket. Is this the Endangered Species Act gone off the rails? We were slaughtering the stronger owl, the barred owl, while someone hand-fed the spotted owl. The barred owl we were slaughtering would have eventually replaced the spotted owl in nature's process of natural selection. The stronger owl would have survived if we'd let nature take its course. Why did we interfere with natural selection? Could it be that the barred owl better coexists with human activities such as logging? How shameful. Doug Dusenberry, Gold Hill Best wishes to thief My best wishes to you who relieved my front yard the night of Feb. 22 of the large double-faced brass clock placed in memory of a dear friend that is no longer with us. At my age of 94, pleasures come infrequently, but one I treasured was looking out each morning to note the time on its big face while remembering my friend. I sincerely hope a thief such as yourself will enjoy it as much as I have. Oh, and please return for the cast iron base. Marvin Reed, Medford Help was outstanding Recently I needed to know the welfare of a relative in your community of Eagle Point. The assistance I received from the Sheriff's Office, area hospitals and churches was outstanding. Everyone was so helpful. What a beautiful community! Patricia Chelimsky, Woodland Hills, Calif. Disturbing news I am very disturbed by the news that VA Secretary McDonald is already wanting to take money from the Veteran's Choice Program. The program went into place in November, and I just received my Choice card in Medford. So for sure many others are just receiving their cards or have yet to receive theirs. Yes, the VA does  need to do a better job of promoting. Not only of better promoting the program but also telling the veterans how to use it. Even the VA staff at White City are still confused on how it's to be used, let alone us the veterans. So taking money away from this program only three months after being launched is premature and irresponsible. There indeed needs to be a change in how the VA computes the distance, especially for rural area veterans. If I were in Butte Falls and had to come to Medford, you can lose several miles because they figure it "as the crow flies." Our roads do not allow for us to travel as a crow! Veterans, please let your representatives know that Secretary McDonald needs to allow the program time to work and see it is highly promoted.
