Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 6, 2006 St. Mary’s boys pull away from Glendale Prep Basketball The first half offensively was one the St. Mary’s boys basketball team would like to forget. The Crusaders shot just 26 percent from the field over the opening two quarters but turned on the jets in the second half to cruise to a 55-39 victory over Glendale in the Southern Cascade League opener for both teams at St. Mary’s High. St. Mary’s (8-2, 1-0 SCL) rode the hot hand of Ritchie Kaimie — 11 of his 16 points came in the second half — to pull away. "Offensively, we were pretty inept tonight," said St. Mary’s coach Rick Jackson. "We pressured the ball and got a lot of turnovers but we didn’t have much to show for it. "We got better as the night went on offensively, so that was a positive." Advertisement Kaimie and Nick Terry, who came off the bench to score six second-half points, added the spark the Crusaders needed against Glendale’s zone defense. "Those two guys did a good job of getting us going," said Jackson, who also noted the strong play of Ryan Greene (six points in the fourth quarter). Austin Grant had a strong floor game for St. Mary’s, scoring 11 points to go with eight assists, while Terry pulled down six rebounds. The Challengers (9-3, 1-0 SCL) held Riddle to eight points in the first half and led 35-13 entering the final period. Cascade outrebounded the Irish 44-22. Senior Joe Ayala led the Challengers with 10 rebounds and Josh Heidegger pulled down nine. Senior wing Bret Swett paced Riddle with 12 points, with 10 coming from the free-throw line.. The Challengers (9-3, 1-0 SCL) soared to a 33-7 advantage after one period and led 52-17 at halftime. Catherine McCandless added 10 points and Melissa Gmur contributed eight points, six rebounds and 10 assists for the Challengers. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (76) — O’Brien 22, S. Junior wing Melissa Lass scored 16 points, sophomore guard Whitney Adderson had 11 points and sophomore post Kaitlin Carini produced six points, six steals and six rebounds for St. Mary’s (4-8, 0-1 SCL).
