The jobs are those of 84 Air Force personnel, some of whom have already arrived. The rest will be arriving during the next year. They are coming in to help with the training of F-15C pilots, the primary mission of the air defense detachments at Kingsley Field. It's the United States' only F-15C training base. Commanding them is Lt. Col. Christopher Clark, who praised the job done by the Air National Guard's 173rd Fighter Wing in training pilots. He said the goal of the Air Force is to hasten the training. He emphasized the importance of Kingsley saying, "Here at Kingsley they train every pilot that goes to every U.S. Air Force active duty unit and every Air National Guard F-15 unit, so Kingsley Field is extremely important." The F-15C is regarded as one of the best air-to-air fighters ever made — maybe even the best, newer fighter planes notwithstanding. The United States has depended on it since it first went into service in 1974. It has been constantly upgraded and is expected to the major air defense component of United States for at least another decade or more. That makes Kingsley an essential air base. It also points out the continued need for Klamath Falls to be looking beyond the F-15C, regardless of whether that comes in 10 years or 20. What can it do to keep the base active and a vital part of the nation's defense system? Eighty-four jobs are an addition not just to the local economy, but also in the same ways that Kingsley personnel have been a part of the community for years such as helping with community events and programs and sometimes leading them. Just as those who have been a part of Kingsley for many years, and even retired here, the new personnel are more than welcome.
