Schumann leads SOU past Pac-10 foe Mail Tribune / Drew Fleming By Don Hunt ASHLAND � Ryan Schumann was a bit nervous as he walked onto the wrestling mat Saturday afternoon. After all, the Southern Oregon University standout hadn�t competed in three weeks because of a rib injury. And he was up against Portland State star Quinn Collett, who twice had beaten him earlier this season. Further, their bout would have a huge bearing on the overall winner of Saturday�s dual match between the Raiders and the Vikings. Schumann squeaked out a 4-2 decision in the 174-pound match, and SOU walked off with a 22-18 victory over the Pacific-10 Conference school at McNeal Pavilion. "Tuesday was my first day back at practice, and I honestly didn�t know how I was going to hold up out there today," said Schumann, a senior from Las Vegas who improved his season record to 22-4. "I�ve been swimming and riding a bike, but I haven�t been able to do any upper-body work. "But the whole team was behind me, and that gave me the confidence I needed." With the score tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Schumann rode out Collett for most of the session and wiped out the PSU wrestler�s riding time advantage. Schumann was content to have the match extend into overtime, but he tilted Collett just enough in the waning seconds of regulation to register a two-point near fall and the victory. "I wasn�t sure I had him tilted enough, but the ref started counting (for the near fall) and I was able to hold it for (the necessary) two counts," Schumann said. Schumann seemingly had Collett conquered the last time they met in January, but Collett tied the match in the final seconds of regulation and then edged Schumann in overtime. "It feels great to finally beat him," said Schumann, who also lost to Collett in November. Schumann�s victory gave SOU a 16-9 advantage, and the Raiders clinched the win two matches later at 197 when Devin Parks pinned James Adams in 4:38. SOU forfeited the heavyweight bout when it was disclosed that Dan Sturgell would not have been able to return to his normal weight of 184 later this season had he taken the mat Saturday. Under a rule implemented last season, a wrestler can go up two weights but then subsequently move down only one. Raiders coach Mike Ritchey was ready to send Sturgell to the mat when the Portland State coaches brought the situation to his attention. Sturgell, perhaps SOU�s top wrestler and an NAIA national contender at 184, would have had to grapple at 197 the rest of the season had he competed at heavyweight Saturday. Sturgell was put at heavyweight because SOU�s regular 285-pounder, Devin Cole, is sidelined with a broken thumb. "This was a technicality that I overlooked," Ritchey admitted. "I would have felt terrible had Sturgell gone out there and then faced the consequences. "Luckily, the outcome was already decided and the Portland State coaches were gracious enough to bring it to our attention. We�ve got a good relationship with those people, and it�s a good thing." Each team won five matches and each earned six points in the last two matches � Parks� fall and the forfeit at heavyweight. The difference came courtesy of two match termination wins by SOU: senior Jeremy Wynia�s 20-5 romp over K.C. Banks at 141 and freshman John Sills� 25-10 rout over Rohan Theobald at 165. Match termination victories are worth five points. "We thought we�d be the ones to get those extra team points, but instead it was them," said Portland State coach Marlin Grahn, whose team saw its dual meet record slip to 3-7-1. "They wrestled more aggressively than we did and deserved to win. "We just have to put this behind us and move on." Although Schumann�s win provided SOU with the impetus it needed, Parks� fall was the back breaker. The sophomore from Lowell built a quick 5-0 lead over Adams with a takedown and near fall and then pinned him with 22 seconds remaining in the second period. "I got an overhook and threw him to his back," said Parks, who improved his record to 17-10. "I pinned him earlier this season, and I knew I could do it again if I went after him."
