The defending Class 3A champion opened the state playoffs with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-10 home victory over Willamina Saturday to earn a return trip to the eight-team tournament Friday at Forest Grove High. The top-seeded Challengers (22-3) will meet No. 8 Blanchet in the quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Blanchet defeated Burns, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, Saturday. “They showed something today,” said Cascade Christian coach Rob Kleker. “I’m really happy with where we are. Hopefully, we can carry it through next weekend. They got back to playing together. It really felt and looked like they jelled. They’re having fun and played a lot better defense than I thought we had the last couple matches.” Carolina McMahon had a whopping 19 kills to lead the charge. “The thing that’s great about this particular team,” said Kleker, “is the kids have a great understanding of where to go when we need a kill. Six or seven (of McMahon’s kills) came from the back row and were out-of-system attacks. When you have someone who can do that, it keeps the pressure on.” Allison Winter contributed 28 assists and three aces, while Aubrey Kievit had 19 digs and Olivia Borg six kills. GLENCOE 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: At Hillsboro, seventh-seeded Glencoe advanced to the 6A state tournament with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 second-round playoff victory. North Medford (21-9), the 10th seed, got nine kills from Lauren Barry and five each from Sydney Kloek, Adriane McLemore and Kiley Pauck. Pauck added 23 assists and 10 digs, while Barry had 12 digs. Glencoe is 21-5. COQUILLE 3, ST. MARY’S 0: At Coquille, No. 2 seed Coquille (21-3) won the 3A first-round state playoff match, 25-11, 25-12, 25-13, to advance. Katie Rietmann had seven kills and four blocks for the 15th-seeded Crusaders, who ended the season with an 11-14 record. Abbie Christman and Natalie Thickett each had three kills for St. Mary’s and Ashley Gurr nine assists. Lauren Russo and Rietmann led the team in digs, and Grace Johnson played strong defense. Girls Soccer JESUIT 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: At Portland, upstart North Medford gave top-seeded Jesuit — the No. 2-ranked team in the nation by USA Today — all it could handle in the first round of the 6A state playoffs. The 32nd-seeded Black Tornado (5-9-1) held the Crusaders (15-0) scoreless for 62 minutes. After Jesuit tallied, North Medford moved Madison Morgan and Courtney Denn up to enhance its attack, but Jesuit scored with seven minutes left. The Tornado then brought everyone up and allowed a final score with 16 seconds remaining. North Medford had “four or five” solid scoring opportunities that were unsuccessful, said coach Jeff Thomas, whose team had its four-game winning streak snapped. Boys Soccer FOREST GROVE 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 (OT): Forest Grove, the No. 20 seed, scored two goals after halftime, including the decider with five minutes left in overtime, to end No. 13 North Medford’s season in the first round of the 6A state playoffs at Spiegelberg Stadium. Caleb Forte tallied the Black Tornado (7-5-3) goal in the 30th minute off a pass from Luis Cerna. Forest Grove (7-4-4) scored on a free kick 20 minutes into the second half, eventually resulting in overtime. GRANTS PASS 2, GLENCOE 1 (SO): At Grants Pass, the teams went through 23 shootout penalty kicks before the first-round state playoff game was decided. The game was tied 1-1 through regulation and overtime. Both teams made 11 straight penalty kicks before GP’s Hector Pinto-Perez converted and No. 24 Glencoe (5-5-4) missed. Glencoe scored in the first half, and the Cavers’ David Ruiz knotted it in the 60th minute following a corner kick. Grants Pass (8-2-4), the ninth seed, hosts No. 25 Cleveland in the second round Wednesday. Cleveland downed defending state champion Lakeridge, 2-1. Football BUTTE FALLS/CRATER LAKE 58, PROSPECT 6: At Butte Falls, Isaac Tiry ran for three touchdowns and passed for two as Butte Falls closed out the season with a win. The Loggers (4-2) got 190 yards passing from Tiry, who completed 6 of 7 passes. He rushed for 105 yards and touchdowns of 5, 45 and 15 yards. Dalton Lester had 120 yards receiving, scoring on TDs of 70 and 30 yards. He also passed 10 yards to Kaleb Tiry for a score. Jordan Davis tacked on 106 yards rushing, with a 40-yard TD, and Tanner Thomson ran for 100, with a 70-yard score. The TD for Prospect (0-7) came on a 25-yard run by Brendan Raines.
