Wastewater dumped in Rogue River during Grants Pass power outage Grants Pass mishap caused by power outage Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 4:30 PM Posted Aug. 31, 2015 at 4:30 PM » Social News A power outage in parts of downtown Grants Pass caused a glitch at the city's wastewater treatment facility on Greenwood Avenue early Sunday morning, dumping 240,000 gallons of not-yet-disinfected water into the Rogue River. The water had already gone through the filtering and decontamination phases, but was not disinfected, said Terry Haugen, public works director for the city. That phase is dependent on electrical power, and one backup system did not kick on when the power went out. The outage affected more than 1,500 customers and lasted about two hours, ending at 8:16 a.m. According to police dispatch records, a blown transformer caused the outage, which resulted in traffic signal outages downtown. The disinfection process is what kills the bacteria, Haugen said. The amount of water was small in scale and should have posed no hazards to wildlife or people downstream, city officials said.
