No charges will be filed in double-fatal crash on Interstate 5 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 20, 2015 at 10:24 AM Posted Oct. 20, 2015 at 10:24 AM » Social News No criminal charges will be filed in a crash on Interstate 5 that killed a 52-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced this morning. The crash occurred at about 7:20 a.m. Aug. 8 on the shoulder of the northbound lanes near milepost 4. Karamjit Singh Mann, 39, had legally parked his semitrailer on the shoulder of the interstate several hours earlier, set his brakes and went into the sleeper cab to rest, according to the DA's office. The driver of a 2013 Toyota Prius, Blair Stephen Shapiro, 52, traveled onto the interstate’s shoulder for unknown reasons and collided into the rear of the parked semi-truck. Mann was knocked onto the floor by the crash. The crash wedged the Prius under the rear of the trailer. There was no roadway evidence indicating any evasive maneuver by the Prius prior to impact, the DA's office said. Shapiro and his 9-year-old daughter died at the scene. His wife, Peipei Shapiro, 51, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, suffered serious injuries, requiring life-flight to Providence Medford Medical Center. Mann was not injured. Investigators learned from Peipei Shapiro that the family had been traveling from Santa Monica, Calif., to Portland. The Shapiros had considered getting a hotel room earlier in the trip, but decided to continue driving through the night. There was no indication that drugs and/or alcohol were involved, the DA's office said. "Based on the completed investigation, there is absolutely no evidence of culpability on Mr. Mann, and no criminal charges will be filed," the DA's release said.
