PREP VOLLEYBALL Chiefs can't make up ground on Honkers ROGUE RIVER -- The host Chieftains showed definite signs of promise Tuesday night in Skyline Conference play, but not nearly enough to deter Lakeview. The defending conference champs controlled most -- but not all -- of the action in earning a 15-2, 15-9 road win over Rogue River. "They showed that they could play with them," Rogue River coach Briana Grieve said of her squad. "I think they just got intimidated at times and weren't adjusting fast enough." Lakeview (25-3, 8-1 Skyline) dominated the first game, with Jamie Ruda baffling the Chieftains by serving 10 of the Honkers' 15 points. "Game 1 we just weren't there," said Grieve. "We were just serve-receive practice for Lakeview." Trailing 8-0 in the second game, the Chieftains (5-4 Skyline) finally came alive thanks to the serving of Emily Sutherland. The junior served for Rogue River's first four points, including two aces, in the second game. Rogue River took advantage of some Lakeview errors to trim the Honkers' lead to 9-8, only to have Rachel Manibusan register two aces in serving Lakeview to a 12-8 advantage. Sophomore Jennifer Kay had four kills for the Chieftains, while junior Becky Grinde was a perfect 6-of-6 serving and had seven digs. Ruda went 14-of-15 from the service line with two aces, while adding six digs and three kills. PHOENIX 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 8-6 -- At Phoenix, Hidden Valley had difficulty transitioning from serve-receive into its offense and Phoenix kept the pressure on by putting 43-of-45 serves into play. Beth Nikodym, Janene Murphy, Sutton Jackson and Kelly Goodkin combined for Phoenix's nine aces and 35-of-36 serving. Jackson provided five kills and two blocks, while Nikodym and Kathrin Esch added four kills each. HENLEY 15-15, MAZAMA 3-6 -- At Klamath Falls, Erika Clements went 15-for-15 serving with difficult placement as Henley (25-3, 9-0 Skyline) cruised against its cross-town rival to remain undefeated in Skyline action. As a team, the Hornets made good on 47-of-50 serves. Henley sophomore twins Sam and Krystal Young and sophomore Jennifer Klaja had five kills each, while junior setter Bree Maupin added four spikes. NORTH VALLEY 15-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1-5 -- At Merlin, Amanda Renius provided nine kills as North Valley had little trouble improving to 5-4 in Skyline action. Non-conference CASCADE CHRISTIAN 11-15-16, BUTTE FALLS 15-7-14 -- At Butte Falls, the Challengers rallied behind the serving of Krystle Holtz and Christine McCandless to earn a non-league victory. Trailing 13-11 in the third game, Holtz served two straight points for Cascade Christian to tie the match. After Butte Falls (7-4) took a 14-13 lead, the Challengers earned a sideout and McCandless served the game out for Cascade. Junior Elizabeth McLauchlan had four aces and nine kills to lead Butte Falls, while sophomore Jessica Dunlap added four blocks and seven digs. Senior Sara Lawrence also added seven digs for the Loggers. Kristin Salamone had three stuff blocks and Bethany Weaver had three digs for the Challengers (12-4).
