LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs sweep North Coos The Medford Mustangs picked up their 22nd and 23rd wins on the season with a 11-1, 12-7 American Legion twinball sweep over the visiting North Coos Waterfront. Jarred Pagnini picked up his fourth win on the mound in the opener, striking out eight with no walks in six innings of work. Pagnini also held North Coos to three hits, while striking out the side in both the first and sixth innings. Nate Mayben and Charlie Jensen led the Mustangs in the first game, with each chipping in with a 2-for-3 performance while scoring two runs apiece. Jason Brownell, who scored twice and had three RBIs, also had two hits including a three-run homer in the sixth to end the game. In the nightcap, Mayben and Brownell each had two hits for Medford. Mayben scored three runs and had two RBIs, while Brownell scored one run and had one RBI. Pagnini, who drove in two runs and had two RBIs, also tallied two hits in the final game. The Mustangs (23-2 overall, 6-0 league) travel to Portland to play in the Portland Ringor Fourth of July Classic that starts Thursday and runs through Monday. NORTH JACKSON ROYALS 17-7, KLAMATH FALLS HAWKS 1-0 -- At Eagle Point, Justin Whisenhunt completed the American Legion A Area 4 sweep with a three-hit shutout. Whisenhunt (2-2) struck out a season-high 12 and added a pair of hits in the nightcap. Nick Newmann and Charlie Jackson each contributed two hits for the Royals. In the opener, North Jackson exploded for 13 runs in the third inning. The Royals sent 19 batters to the plate and banged out 10 hits. Newmann's two-run homer was the big blast. The Royals received two hit games from B.J. McFall, Evan Pogue, Ryan Garrett and Charlie Jackson. CHEVY'S MAVERICKS 8-3, SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 6-4 -- The South Medford Colts salvaged an American Legion A doubleheader sweep by scoring the winning run on a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning of the nightcap. Ryan Backstrom went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs to lead the Mavericks to an 8-6 opening-game victory. In the second game, Juton Horstman drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the eight to force in the winning run. Colts' pitcher Matt Skundrick had six strikeouts and two walks in seven-innings. Softball BLUE ACES TAKE THIRD -- At Salem, Amanda Blair collected seven hits and Jenny Arthur added five as the Blue Aces finished third in the 15th annual Stark Street Tournament. The Blue Aces lost to eventual tournament winner the Southern Oregon Stars, 4-2, in the semifinals. The Blue Aces were the only team to score off the Stars in the event.
