Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 3, 2006 Man fleeing cops takes swim Apprehended several blocks downstream, he was jailed, facing multiple charges A man fleeing police after a reported fight went for a wild swim in Bear Creek early Thursday. Officers arrested Don Rowden, 38, on multiple charges after he washed up on the east side of Bear Creek near Fourth Street in Medford, several blocks from where he jumped into the water. Police went to an apartment in the 200 block of Cottage Street shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday when a family dispute was reported. As officers arrived Rowden sped away in a car, Lt. Mike Moran said. With an officer in pursuit, Rowden’s vehicle hit a parked car near the intersection of Ninth and Tripp streets. He then continued driving on Tripp Street to Eighth Street. There he leaped out of the car, ran to Bear Creek and jumped into the water, which was running high and muddy following recent storms. He was rapidly swept downstream. Advertisement An officer chasing him ran along a creekside bike path and reported that Rowden struggled to stay afloat and keep his head above the roiling surface of the creek. The officer described the situation in the water as "life- threatening," Moran said. The pursuing officer reported via radio about where Rowden was headed and officers met the wet, cold fugitive as he scrambled to shore near Fourth Street. Police arrested Rowden on charges of attempting to elude police on foot and in a vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, felony fourth-degree assault, coercion, harassment and disorderly conduct. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail and his car was towed.
