Skundrick leads South to sweep over GP GRANTS PASS � Matt Skundrick got off to a shaky start, but was still unhittable against Grants Pass in Southern Oregon Conference baseball Saturday. The South Medford senior struck out 16 and pitched a no-hitter during an 8-1 opening- game victory, and the Panthers completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in the nightcap. Skundrick�s only trouble came in the first inning when he walked the first two batters and eventually gave up the Cavemen�s only run on Brady Howe�s sacrifice fly on a foul ball down the right-field line. "He (Skundrick) was overthrowing and was working way too hard trying to get his fastball by them in the first inning," South Medford coach Pete Whisler said. "He settled down and started leading with his breaking ball. After the first inning, he was in command." The Panthers (7-6, 4-0 SOC) staked Skundrick to all the runs he would need by scoring three in their first at-bat. Ryan Heil opened with a double and Jimmie Maddox followed with a walk. Skundrick reached on a fielder�s choice that forced Maddox at second. David Henneman delivered an RBI double, Matt Smith provided a run-scoring single and John McCollum�s groundout scored a run. Skundrick also contributed at the plate with a two-run homer in the seventh. Clint Rodreick wasn�t as overpowering as Skundrick in the second game, but the Panther junior right-hander only needed 66 pitches and didn�t walk a batter. Rodreick had a no-hitter until the fifth, when Grants Pass got three of its four hits and scored all three runs. "He (Rodreick) threw strikes," said Whisler. "He was constantly ahead of the hitters. He got lots of ground balls." Whisler credited Skundrick with some strong defensive support at shortstop in the second game. Skundrick also scored South�s first run in the opening inning when he walked with two outs and was brought home on a single by Henneman. McCollum walked and scored on Cody George�s double in the second and added a two-run single in the third. "He (McCollum) had some key hits for us," said Whisler. "He put the ball in play all day when we needed it." South collected 15 hits in the doubleheader, with Maddox leading the way with a pair in each game. "Our kids were aggressive swinging the bats today," said Whisler. "We squandered a couple of opportunities because of base-running mistakes, but overall we played pretty good baseball." Skyline Conference PHOENIX 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 � At Cave Junction, Nathen Emerson drilled an RBI double that broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, and Phoenix went on to beat Illinois Valley in Skyline Conference baseball. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out and will be made up Monday at 4:30 p.m. With the scored tied 1-1 in the fourth, Jake Mahon drew a one-out walk. One out later, Craig Cooper walked and Emerson followed with his two-bagger that scored Mahon and put the Pirates ahead to stay. Kyle Kaufman followed with a two-run single that gave Phoenix (6-3, 4-4 Skyline) some breathing room. Landon Rhodes scattered seven hits over seven innings to pick up the victory and improve his record to 3-1. District 6 CASCADE CHRISTIAN 10-15, NORTH LAKE 0-0 � At White City, Bryan Edwards allowed one hit and struck out 11 in the opener and pitchers Chad Harvey and Jon Gettman completed the doubleheader shutout sweep for Cascade Christian (6-2, 2-0 Dist. 6) at the V.A. Domiciliary. Cody Eide�s leadoff single in the fourth was North Lake�s sole hit off of Edwards (4-0). Back-to-back doubles by Nolan Roberts and Edwards in the fifth ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Blake McCormick added two hits and one RBI in the opener. In Game 2, Harvey and Gettman allowed two hits and combined for 10 strikeouts and three walks. Roberts� run-scoring triple highlighted the Challengers� four-run first inning. Cascade then used eight hits, two walks and three errors during an 11-run, second-inning outburst. Roberts and Adam Rutledge provided two-run singles.
