One thing about the change in seasons, however, has the potential to be catastrophic. Each summer forest fires rage and each summer our beautiful forests are destroyed and our resources are depleted. As if that wasn’t bad enough, these fires release more CO2 into the atmosphere than any other single contributor. That is why I find it strange that Lee Lull, whose letter was published April 14, would accuse Rep. Greg Walden of doing nothing to stop greenhouse gases. Walden has repeatedly passed legislation, on a bipartisan basis, which would fix our broken forest policy and protect the forests from burning up each summer. Protecting our forests means less CO2 gets released into the atmosphere; it’s that simple. So, anyone who wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions should ask Sen. Ron Wyden to pass Walden’s bill through the Senate. Thanks to Greg Walden for tirelessly working to protect the people of Southern Oregon, our forests, and our health. Marcia Weber Medford Hooray for Holly As a former Medford resident now living in Seattle, I come to Medford three or four times a year because it will always be home to me. On a recent trip I had the very special experience of touring the Holly Theatre, seeing what has been restored and hearing about what is still to be done. What a treat!! This piece of Medford history has every right to be brought back to its full glory. I, for one, hope to attend its opening night performance. I believe in it so much that, stingy as I am and small as it is, I am going to donate my tax refund this year back to the Holly Restoration Project. Keep up the good work. Arline Borella, Seattle What about free press? In regard to your opinion Thursday, April 16: We are so blessed our far-sighted Founding Fathers created documents like the First Amendment. Then before the ink was dry they created the Second Amendment, the Third and more until they were done telling the government what it couldn't do. Three lines caught my attention. "Won't stop all criminals'" Won't block all undesirable gun transfers" and "Government officials haven't tried seizing anyone's lawfully held guns yet." Just ask Mr. Pyles (MT, 2010) Suppose our progressive government decides the transfer of speech from your freedom of the press should now be subject to background checks. Any new subscriber, any sharing of information to other media, any neighbor saving your papers for a week, while your deathly-allergic-to-newsprint cousin stays at your house, were subject to the government deciding what is OK or not. You are the first to complain when open records are not made to your paper. I know; I read it. But, newspapers and speech don't kill people, unless in criminal hands, right? They wont seize your presses yet, right? Seems negligent to try to make felons out of almost 2 million law abiding Oregonians to me.
