Central Ave., Medford » Social News Cruising down Interstate 5 in Jackson County, a driver who pushes "scan" on a car radio might by chance find KSKQ 94.9 FM, or might not. There are reports of the Ashland-based, low-power, community radio station being heard on car radios in certain spots in Medford and even as far as Eagle Point, but mostly it's only available in Ashland and Talent. And forget about listening to the station at home. Its antenna broadcasts only vertical radio waves, which reach car radios. Home radios receive horizontal waves. "There are some sweet spots in Medford, where you can pick us up pretty clearly," said Jason Houk, KSKQ station manager. "The southern end of Ashland is the strongest signal." The Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon, which operates the nonprofit station, is trying to put an end to all those inconveniences and to reach out to a broader audience by switching to a full-power signal. Now, the station is seeking input from the community on its future. KSKQ and the multicultural association will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Adams Room at the Medford Branch Library, 205 S. Central Ave. "We are getting organized," said Connie Saldaña, multicultural association board member. "In a way, it's like building a new station even though we are really building on what we have because we are expanding our listening audience. We want a lot more people to be involved who understand the importance of community radio." The station has two subcommittees, one for fundraising and another for marketing for the full-power station, which will be called KORV for Our Rogue Valley. The Federal Communication Commission already has licensed the multicultural association to upgrade to full power, and the station is applying for a $90,000 grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to buy new equipment as well as replace the station's two recording studios. If the station receives the grant, it will have to provide about $45,000 in matching funds. "Our goal is to raise $60,000 before we go on the air," Saldaña said. "That way we have some money for operations." A full-power signal will allow the station to reach throughout the county as well as broadcast on home radio. "It's really the signal we want," Houk said. During the interim period, the station is upgrading its 60-watt signal to a 100-watt signal, which should improve reception in people's cars. The radio station went on the airwaves in late 2007 after about two years of providing programming online. It has an annual budget of about $50,000, mostly funded with grants, donations and memberships. The mission of the station is to advance understanding and social change by focusing on local voices in its programming. The station also broadcasts programming from Pacifica Radio, such as "Democracy Now!" Listeners can access the station's programming anytime via online streaming at kskq.org .
