LOCAL ROUNDUP Mavericks fall prey to Sheldon rally Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News GRANTS PASS — North Medford came up just shy in setting up a scenario where the Mavericks would have to be beaten twice today in order to pry away the American Legion A baseball state championship, falling 6-5 to Sheldon on Saturday at the All-Sports Park. The Mavericks led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but Sheldon capitalized to win in walk-off fashion. After a one-out error and a pair of walks loaded the bases, Sheldon’s Shawn Riera supplied a two-run double to keep his team’s title hopes alive heading into the final day of competition. North Medford (43-8-1) had already qualified for today’s championship game as the last remaining undefeated team in the bracket after Friday’s win over Pendleton. The Mavericks will play in the 2:30 p.m. title game against the winner of a Sheldon-Pendleton matchup that will be played at noon. North Medford scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Dakota Adams. Berry Hunt’s leadoff double got things going for the Mavericks and, after a bunt single by Kasey Buchanan, Hunt scored on an error at first base following a grounder by Justin Geyer. Tyler Oedekoven then reached on a fielder’s choice after his grounder hit courtesy runner Dallas Casebier, but Honus Kindreich regained the momentum with an RBI single to plate Buchanan. Adams then deposited his first home run of the summer over the left field fence. Sheldon was limited to only four hits but took advantage of 13 walks and one hit batter by the Mavericks. Hunt and Adams each finished with two hits and one run scored for North Medford. North Medford;000;500;0;—;5;8;1 Sheldon;010;030;2;—;6;4;3 Z. Track & Field SCHMERBACH TAKES FIFTH: At Jacksonville, Fla., Medford 12-year-old runner Emma Schmerbach placed fifth in the 3,000 meters at the 49th USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships on Saturday. Schmerbach turned in a personal best time of 10 minutes, 34.36 seconds to finish behind winner Daniela Quintero (10:14.39) in the age 11-12 division. The Sacred Heart School seventh grader will compete today in the 1,500 meters.
