Then there's the case of the missing Toyota 4Runner. A San Francisco Bay Area man who claims Galice Resort lost his SUV while he was on a four-day rafting trip on the Rogue River this summer has filed a claim seeking up to $9,774 from the business. Robert Feraru said in a phone interview from his home in Richmond, Calif., that he, his son Brian and five of his son's friends headed to Southern Oregon in June for the trip. "It was a bachelor party for my son's best friend, who was getting married in Seattle in August," Feraru said. Feraru said he's been rafting the Rogue for 30 years. Rather than having a wild party, the groom-to-be wanted to celebrate by replicating the trips he took with Feraru's family growing up. They put in at Almeda and had a great four days on the river, but when they ended their trip at Foster Bar, Feraru said they had an unpleasant surprise: his 2002 Toyota 4Runner wasn't there. He claims he gave Galice Resort the keys to the 4Runner and paid the business $115 to pick it up from Almeda, park it outside the resort during the trip, then drop it off at Foster Bar so it would be there when the group got off the river. "It was one of those really perfect trips until the truck wasn't there," Feraru said. Another group member did have a car at Foster Bar, and some of them drove it to the nearest store to call the resort. At first they were told the 4Runner was on its way; two hours later, when it still hadn't arrived, they called again and were told that the business had neither Feraru's keys nor his vehicle, according to his account of the incident. Feraru said Galice Resort owner Debbie Thomason later told him in person that she had no record of the 4Runner. Thomason declined to comment for this story. She has referred the case to her attorney, Duane Schultz. Schultz wrote in an August letter to Feraru's attorney, "In discussing the matter with Ms. Thomason, I am informed that their company records do not reflect that your client's vehicle … was ever 'entrusted' to the Galice Resort as part of its shuttle service." Feraru says he eventually had to rent a U-Haul in Grants Pass to collect the rafting equipment and bring it back to his home. He reported the 4Runner's disappearance to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office and said a sheriff's employee called him in September to let him know it had been found in Wolf Creek, stripped, with its doors and seats missing. Feraru, who describes himself as a retired senior bureaucrat for the state of California, filed the claim in Josephine County Circuit Court's small claims division Monday. He included credit card records he says show he paid for the shuttle service. He's seeking to be reimbursed for items he says were in his truck — an iPad, an emergency kit, clothing and other belongings — as well as the U-haul rental, gas and other costs. The items listed total $2,774, but the claim is seeking up to $9,774. His insurance paid for the loss, although he said his premiums have gone up because of it.
