But not until after the holiday season. Oregon Cabaret Theatre's Christmas show will be "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," by Joe Landry. With book and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Joe Raposo, the familiar story from the Frank Capra film is a 1945 radio show being put on by actors. The play within the play closely follows the original film starring James Stewart, telling the story of a suicidal man whose guardian angel shows him how different the world would have been if he hadn't lived. "It takes us into Radio Station WFBR in 1946, with studio actors coming together for a coast-to-coast broadcast," says Rachelle. "Five actors play all the characters, and the stage is turned into a vintage broadcast studio." "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" previews Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19 and 20, opens Friday, Nov. 21 and runs through Dec. 31, at OCT, 241 Hargadine St., Ashland. Curtain is at 8 p.m.; 1 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday matinees. Preview tickets cost $19. Other tickets cost $33 or $38. Call 541-488-2902 or see theoregoncabaret.com. The play is not a musical per se, but there is some music, with a piano on the stage and some old-fashioned radio commercials. There are six or seven songs, including the commercial jingles. Products pitched on the air include hair tonic, a toilet cake that "cleans everything" and Dent Cement, a product for dentures. "The audience will see the sound effects produced for the radio audience on the stage," Rachelle says. All of the effects and most of the music are live, and some old Bing Crosby radio shows will be thrown into the mix. When George and Mary throw rocks and break glass, the actors will use a shot glass. There's a wind machine — it's a big crank with some canvas — and a big piece of sheet metal to create the effect of thunder. When the ice breaks to send the young George crashing through the ice, stalks of celery will create the sound. Southern Oregon University graduate Carlos Lopez will play Jake Laurents, the actor who plays George Bailey. OCT veteran John Stadelman will play Harry “Jazzbo” Heywood (the actor who portrays Clarence, Martini and others). Heather Lundstedt will play Lana Sherwood (Violet, Rose Bailey, others). Scott Ford will play Freddie Filmore (Announcer, Potter, others). Alyssa Birrer will play Sally Applewhite (Mary Hatch). Craig Hudson designed the set. The bulk of the show is about what happens during the radio production. "Ninety percent of it is 'It's a Wonderful Life,' " Rachelle says. "It's pretty comic, except that the play takes the spirit of 'It's a Wonderful Life.' George is going through a pretty tough time, but there are comic moments as well as heartfelt ones." Rachelle, who was born and raised in Eugene, has been a freelance director who's traveled the country for years. Her husband is a playwright, film director and computer expert. For the last 14 years, she's been artistic director of Lucid by Proxy, a small nonprofit theater based in North Hollywood that produced 19 new works during that time.
