Leave Obama and my ACA coverage alone! Gregory Avery, Medford Lust for power I remember President Reagan complaining (something like) "I can't run this country with (the number of congressmen) interfering." How long has it been since we had a president who understood that a president does not govern, or run the country? Several years back when President Obama was asked why he did not accomplish something, he answered (inexact quote) "I am not an emperor. If I had the power, I would do it." — implying the he would bypass the legislative process if he could. That shows the same old lust for power which he now flaunts. Is there a person, respecting our Constitution and balance of power, that if president, would ask Congress to properly reduce and define presidential power? A dictatorship is the most efficient form of government. Our system slows the progress of some good laws, and often prevents some really bad ones. Ira Edwards, Medford Good things in west Medford I wish you could have experienced what I saw on Saturday evening, Nov. 22, at Spartan Boxing Gym, 729 Welch St. in west Medford, especially if you have preconceived ideas about youth and families that reside in this area of town. They had a potluck Thanksgiving dinner and talent show that was delightful and inspiring. Platefuls of homemade food were shared and consumed by local families. Children were happily running about. The talent show included an original song by a young songstress accompanied on piano by her brother; a grandpa and grandson duo playing guitar and singing; an accomplished dancer with acrobatic moves; and a thought-provoking, well-written poem by a homeless youth who has changed his life from getting in trouble to finding discipline, self-worth and purpose while being coached by Troy Wohosky at the gym. It brought happy tears to my eyes. It was great to be at a family-friendly event sponsored by the gym. This program believes in channeling aggression, boredom, lack of guidance, poor home life and other obstacles youth may face in a positive way through boxing. Good things are happening in west Medford. Come see for yourself. Clover Leonard, Medford American exceptionalism Calling the Affordable Care Act a “sweeping government health care takeover,” as Dr. Everett did in his letter of Nov. 19, is a gross misrepresentation. Nor is it necessarily newsworthy, much less “monumentally important,” when somebody like Jonathon Gruber says something stupid. For example, Rush Limbaugh, chief architect of the GOP’s Obama Derangement Syndrome, makes stupid, offensive comments every day that also go unreported. Republicans and their minions at Fox “News” consider Gruber’s remarks momentous because they think it somehow justifies dismantling the ACA and denying millions of Americans access to health care. If Republicans would work with Democrats on needed improvements or offer an alternative, it would be laudable. Unfortunately they’re too preoccupied with their infantile spite to act like legislators. A little “American exceptionalism”: The U.S. spends twice as much on health care as other industrialized nations, but has the lowest life expectancy and highest infant mortality rate. By no coincidence, it’s also the only one that lacks some form of universal coverage. Republicans are determined to keep it that way. Their rabid opposition to expanding access has made compassionate conservatism an oxymoron.
