The 2008 story was published in New Jersey Monthly magazine and recounts an armed robbery that Williams says happened to him while he was selling Christmas trees. He told an abbreviated version of the story in 2005 to Esquire. Daniel Murphy Jr., 71, told USA Today that he doubted Williams’ story. "To be robbed in front of a church? Red Bank just wasn't like that. It was the kind of town where as a kid I'd leave the house in the morning and not come back until 8, 9 o'clock at night and you never worried about safety," he said.
