Joan Schultz Jan 22, 2017 12:00 AM A A April 7, 1928 - January 4, 2017 Harriet Joan Schultz, 88, passed away January 4, 2017 at her home in Jacksonville, Oregon with her family at her side. Joan was born April 7, 1928 in Santa Cruz, California to Harry and Ruth Morton. Growing up in Santa Cruz, Joan loved the beach and was a strong swimmer. She met her husband in high school, Ted Schultz – one of the original members of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club. After high school Joan traveled to Los Angeles to attend Pepperdine University for two years, until her father’s death forced her to return home. Back in Santa Cruz she rekindled her relationship with Ted, marrying in 1951. Joan and Ted moved to Carmel, California, where Ted began his architectural career. During their time there Joan gave birth to two sons, Martin and Peter. Always up for an adventure, Joan and Ted moved to Anchorage in 1957 when Alaska was still a territory. The family enjoyed Alpine and cross-country skiing, hiking, bicycling, canoeing, hunting, and fishing. Joan was president of the Arctic Toastmistress Club and worked for Northwest Airlines for 18 years as a bookkeeper. Her job at Northwest allowed the family to travel the world including East Africa, Europe, and Asia. Joan and Ted’s last international trip was to the Chelsea Flower Show in England. They also enjoyed traveling around the United States, Mexico, and Canada in their cozy little camper van. After retirement in 1982, Joan and Ted moved to their mountain ranch in the hills east of Ashland, Oregon. They built a cabin and house; rode their horses; and enjoyed rafting the Rogue River and hiking in the area. In 1992 they sold their ranch, trading the mountain life for a seafaring adventure living aboard their newly acquired 39-foot sailboat, the ‘Arltunga.’ They explored Puget Sound and points north into Canada from their home harbor on Bainbridge Island, Washington. After two years on the boat it was time to settle down again so in 1994 Joan and Ted sold the boat and moved to Jacksonville, Ore. where they participated in local community organizations. Joan was president of the Jacksonville Garden Club, was in a book club, and was involved in volunteer activities including reading to elementary students for whom English was a second language, and also volunteering at Rogue Regional Medical Center. Joan and Ted were also members of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Joan is survived by her sister, Barbara Jones of Des Moines, Wash.; her brother, David (Sharron) Morton of Hendersonville, North Carolina; and her sons, Martin (Jennifer) of Anchorage and Peter (Laura) of Ashland, Ore.; and six grandchildren, Sarah, Eric, Grant, Ruby, Roxy, and Cody. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Ted Schultz in 2015 and by her sister, Charlotte Seidlinger. A memorial service will be held in Jacksonville in April 2017. Joan Schultz
