How the Cole Smith shooting unfolded Following are the events on the night of the fatal shooting of Cole Smith, compiled from an Oregon State Police chronology of the incident: 7:20 p.m. -- Cole Smith pulls into the state police headquarters parking lot in Central Point, gets out of his truck, calls a dispatcher and asks to speak to an officer. He says he's "going to kill somebody." 7:25 p.m. -- OSP troopers Chris Matlock and Bill Matson find Smith. He's in his truck, crying. Smith tells troopers he's going to shoot someone. 7:26 p.m. -- Matlock and Matson have drawn their guns on Smith, who remains inside his pickup. 7:28 p.m. -- OSP dispatch requests Central Point police backup. Three officers and one reserve officer arrive within a minute. 7:31 p.m. -- Medford police begin arriving. 7:32 p.m. -- OSP dispatch contacts Trooper Tanya Henderson, a hostage negotiator, and requests her presence at the scene. 7:35 p.m. -- OSP dispatch contacts Lt. Terry Simons, who will assume command of the scene. 7:41 p.m. -- Simons requests that a Medford police officer bring a beanbag shotgun to the scene. 7:50 p.m. -- Simons arrives at the parking lot. 7:54 p.m. -- OSP dispatchers try to find information on Smith, placing a call to police in Grass Valley, Calif. An officer there tells dispatchers Smith has a history of mental problems, that he has threatened suicide and that officers once confiscated a pellet gun from him. 7:57 p.m. -- Negotiator Henderson arrives. Sometime shortly after 8 p.m. -- Medford police Sgt. Jerry Burchfiel requests that MPD Detective Tim Lytle deliver a "flash-bang" to the scene. 8 p.m. -- Smith tells police he has a round in the chamber of his gun, which he has not shown officers. 8:03 p.m. -- Smith begins moving his pickup back and forth after Henderson and Deputy Joe Puckett, with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, try to talk with him. The negotiators decide to use a cellular phone to improve communication while Puckett uses a loud speaker to talk to Smith. Henderson requests that OSP dispatch call Smith's wife. 8:14 p.m. -- Henderson requests that a representative from Jackson County Mental Health be called. 8:20 p.m. -- Lytle arrives and gives the flash-bang to Burchfiel. 8:30 p.m. -- Smith begins moving his truck again and officers deploy spike strips to prevent him from leaving the parking lot. 8:37 p.m. -- Police contact a mental health representative and request his presence. 8:48 p.m. -- OSP dispatch reaches Jennifer Smith by telephone. She tells dispatchers that her husband takes medication for depression and anxiety. She says he's not allowed to have weapons and that he is not a violent man. She also suggests he may have taken an overdose and notes he has a heart problem. 8:52 p.m. -- OSP dispatch notifies police that Jennifer Smith is waiting on another line. 8:53 p.m. -- Simons authorizes the use of the flash-bang, which Lytle throws into the bed of Smith's truck. The flash-bang detonates and officers approach Smith's truck, opening the driver's door. Officers are unable to pull Smith from the truck and he accelerates, hitting several police cars. Smith then gets out of the pickup and approaches officers, screaming that he's going to kill them. Central Point police Sgt. Steven McGee yells that beanbag rounds are being fired. Smith continues to approach officers and pulls an object from his coat. Officers open fire on Smith. 8:55 p.m. -- Smith is pronounced dead.
