Challengers fall shy in bid to top Santiam PENDLETON -- Following up their upset win on Tuesday was going to be tough to follow for the Cascade Christian girls basketball team. The Challengers found that out the hard way Wednesday, dropping a tough 43-40 decision to Santiam in the Class 2A state tournament. "We surprised everybody (Tuesday)," said Cascade Christian coach Loren King on his team's 50-46 win over City Christian. "But we couldn't surprise them (Santiam)." The Challengers showed signs of a letdown early, falling behind by eight points in the second quarter and, following a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer by Santiam's Erin Plotts, trailed by 11 at the half. Cascade shaped up in the second half by trimming the lead behind strong play from Kelly Clarke and Christine McCandless. The Challengers eventually shaved the lead to one point in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter but could not get over the hump. Clarke finished with 15 points to lead the Challengers. McCandless added 12 while Plotts tallied over half of Santiam's final score with 23. Cascade matches up with Oakridge today. "We aren't done yet," said King. "The kids have stayed tough the whole time so I think we'll be fine tomorrow." CASCADE CHRISTIAN (40) -- Clarke 15, McCandless 12, Salamone 6, Conley 2, Bostwick 2, Flood 3, Roos 0, Gettman 0.
