She died peacefully in her Care Suite at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore. on September 26, 2015. Myrtle met Harris Dalbec, her husband of almost 70 years, while they both were working at a U.S. Army chemical warfare camp in Gadsen, Ala. They married on October 6, 1943, in Santa Ana, Calif., where Harris’s family resided. When Harris was sent to Europe during World War II, Myrtle stayed at the camp in Gadsen teaching the soldiers how to figure their payrolls. After the war, Myrtle and Harris moved back to California where both were employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Upon retirement they moved to Los Osos, Calif. From there, they traveled extensively, especially by car, seeing all of the “Lower 48.” They moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in 1995 and continued to travel, volunteer, and do crafts. Myrtle was a tireless knitter who created several hundred “caps for kids” over the years. She also did beautiful hand-quilting, seed-bead work, cross-stitch, and needlepoint. Just weeks before her death, she was teaching herself to “tat.” Tragically, the Dalbec’s only child, Dorothy, was killed in an automobile accident in North Carolina in 1973. Harris passed away in 2013. A short service celebrating the lives of Harris and Myrtle will be held at 2:00 .pm., Tuesday, October 20, 2015 in the Sunrise Room on the second floor of the “Terrace” building of the Rogue Valley Manor, 1250 Mira Mar, Medford, Ore. In lieu of flowers, contributions memorializing Myrtle and Harris may be sent to the Medical Transportation Fund of the RVM Foundation, 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, Ore. 97504.
