The south Medford interchange, however, is raw concrete and unattractive by comparison. Why is that? — J., Medford As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Although the south Medford Interstate 5 interchange is not a warm sand color, it does have its own decorative elements. The overpass has a medium gray and dark gray block pattern, plus light-colored silhouettes of fish, cattails and conifer branches with needles and cones. The animal and plant art elements are a nod to Bear Creek, which flows beneath the overpass. Instead of a pedestrian guardrail, the overpass is made to look like it is topped with stacked rocks to form a pedestrian guard wall. Medford's north overpass, by contrast, is more plain. It has the stacked rock-style pedestrian guard wall, but lacks the nature artwork found on the south overpass. The north overpass area does have extensive landscaping.
