Today I noticed four or five men standing on the sidewalks handing out little books to all the students as they left Hedrick Middle school grounds. They were small New Testaments. I find this incredibly offensive and wasteful. We have a serious hunger and homeless epidemic in our community. Many of these kids will go to bed hungry while others will sleep in a car or a tent tonight. I personally believe that giving out Bibles is not at all in line with Jesus' teachings. Please, if you want to show a true Christian heart, use the money and resources it takes to make those books to give out healthy food to children in need. I wonder, what would happen if people started giving out Korans, Bhagavad Gitas or other religious texts to our children? I would not be comfortable with that either. Who are these people? Have they had background checks? Why are they allowed to speak with our children on school grounds if they have not been properly screened? It is a parent's job to teach their children about religion, not some stranger on the street corner lurking after school. Alice DiMicele, Medford See Plaza film The Plaza documentary, "Where Have All The Colors Gone" has received many inquiries about when it will debut. Our two previous films, “Two in a Million” (Dave Marston and Robin Lawson) and “Bowmer in the Park” were accepted by Ashland Independent Film Festival as well as other festivals. However, this film will premiere at Ashland’s Havurah Shir Hadash on Wednesday, April 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. A $5 donation is requested, refreshments will be served, and live music by Bryan Holley will precede the screening. Based on two years of fact-gathering, interviews and analysis of public records accessed by invoking the Freedom of Information Act, “Where Have All The Colors Gone” uses film to hold up a mirror that reflects how unprepared Ashland’s City Hall was to undertake renovating the downtown Plaza. We hope that this film will inspire citizens to open their hearts and minds and help create positive action to restore our historic Plaza. Join us at the Havurah, 185 N. Recently, one of my drivers came in after hours and noticed two men breaking into my trucks. He called me at home, I grabbed my baseball bat, and headed down there. On the way, I saw an OSP officer in the 7-Eleven parking lot. I thought, rather than assault someone with my bat and face potential charges, I should let the proper authorities handle it. I pulled into 7-Eleven, pulled next to the officer's car, rolled down my window and said, “Hello, how are you doing tonight?” He responded with, “Pull over there" in a demanding voice. I pulled into a parking spot, where I was confronted by the officer stating; “It really pisses me off when someone pulls next to me!” I was shocked, and honestly didn’t know what to say. I asked him if he was on duty, and his response was, in a very sarcastic tone; “Badge, car — yes.” He turned from me and walked into the store. At no point did he ask me what I needed, or show any kind of concern. Apparently "protect and serve" means they protect and serve their own best interest, which must have been a cup of coffee?
