Steven Allen Martin, 25, of the 100 block of Almond Street in Medford entered not guilty pleas this week to charges of second-degree burglary, first-degree and second-degree theft and first-degree and second-degree criminal mischief. He has a pretrial conference in Jackson County Circuit Court set for July 6. An indictment alleges he sold stolen merchandise and caused more than $1,000 damage to the store. Medford police responded to a report of a burglary at Shoes Right Here on North Bartlett Street June 4, but the suspects had already fled. Martin was identified as a suspect, an affidavit said. The suspects allegedly had crawled into the business through a fan in the ceiling, the affidavit said. On June 13, police contacted Martin regarding an unrelated shoplifting case and took him into custody in connection with the shoe-store burglary. "Martin refused to provide a statement on either case, but was wearing a pair of Jordan tennis shoes that are believed to have been stolen in the burglary," the affidavit said. "Martin was lodged at the jail, and the shoes were seized as evidence." Martin remains in jail on $37,000 bail in the burglary case, as well as for allegedly driving under the influence of intoxicants and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He has pleaded guilty in a variety of cases in the past, including methamphetamine possession, DUII, harassment and fourth-degree assault, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records.
