Mark Helfrich and his staff are heading out on the recruiting trail this month, leaving it up to the next generation of leaders to make sure Oregon football doesn’t experience a downward spiral in the post-Marcus Mariota era. “I love our guys, I love our culture, all those things haven’t changed,” Helfrich said after Saturday’s entertaining spring game, which included seven touchdowns passes from four different quarterbacks and one from receiver Bralon Addison. “From now until fall camp, it’s theirs. I feel comfortable putting it into the hands of some of the leadership that has developed. Now we’ve got to get better going into fall camp.” Jeff Lockie emerged as the leader in the clubhouse for the starting quarterback job, following up 14 consistent practices with a perfect passing day (9-for-9, 223 yards, three touchdowns) to lead Pathway to a 35-29 victory against Oregon at Autzen Stadium. “Jeff Lockie is a very natural leader, and it’s very important that people respond to him,” Helfrich said. “They do.” Adding to the intrigue of fall camp will be the arrival of Eastern Washington star Vernon Adams, who plans to transfer in June to take the reins of the blur offense for a one-and-done senior season at Oregon. Offensive coordinator Scott Frost will be burning the midnight oil trying to make sure Adams is up to speed with the X’s and O’s before hitting the reset button on the quarterback competition in August. “I have a ton of confidence in our process and how we do things here. As long as I’ve been here, every time we’ve lost a player that people didn’t think we could replace, the program ended up just fine,” Frost said when asked about life without Mariota, the program’s first Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted with the No. 2 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans last Thursday. “I remember when LaMichael (James) left, we couldn’t replace him. When Darron (Thomas) left early, people worried about us replacing him. “We lost one of the best players in college football in recent memory, and a few other really good guys, but we’re built to have a chance. If our guys keep working the way they’ve been working, I’m going to feel pretty good going into this fall.” Some of the other leaders from the Pac-12 and Rose Bowl championship team who can now be found on NFL rosters include center Hroniss Grasu, left tackle Jake Fisher, cornerbacks Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Troy Hill, linebackers Derrick Malone and Tony Washington and defensive end Arik Armstead. Helfrich said left tackle Tyler Johnstone is a strong vocal leader, and Royce Freeman is “a guy who does everything right.” On the defensive side, Alex Balducci, DeForest Buckner and Rodney Hardrick are three seniors the rest of the players can follow. The Ducks are coming off a historic season, which was capped with an appearance in the inaugural College Football Playoff title game, but the slate has been wiped clean. “We don’t spend a lot of time celebrating what we did,” said secondary coach John Neal, who is reloading with an enticing group of confident players, including Charles Nelson. “I figure when I retire I’m going to go and see how many rings and stuff I have and kind of go, ‘That was a good year.’ “Right now it just doesn’t matter.
