Ashland runs away from South The Ashland Grizzlies can breathe a bit easier. After dropping its Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball opener to Grants Pass on Tuesday, Ashland faced the prospect of an 0-2 start heading into Christmas break. But the Grizzlies bounced back with a vengeance Friday night. Ashland surged to a 34-18 lead in the first half and rolled past its chief rival in pursuit of defending SOC champion Crater with a 62-47 victory at South Medford. "We knew we had to win this game," said Ashland senior post Jackie Woods, who celebrated her moms birthday with 28 points and five rebounds. "We had to rise to the occasion and everybody stepped up to do their part." Woods sank 12 of 17 shots, mostly from medium range, as Ashland connected on 29 of 54 (.537) field goal attempts. Ashlands full-court zone press caused just 10 turnovers, but it took its toll on Souths shooting touch as the Panthers hit just 17 of 50 (.340) shots. "They dont play a lot of people, and I think some of their shots were a little short," Ashland coach Heather Roberts said, suggesting the Panther shooters tired. "We also started to run the floor better in the second half." No one else got into double figures for the Grizzlies (3-3, 1-1 SOC), but six others scored and point guard Hanna Seltzer chalked up seven assists. Kellie Thomas had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Whitney Grant had 11 points and four assists for South (4-3, 1-1 SOC). Karla Zenz had eight rebounds. "We didnt shoot well and we werent getting great looks at the basket," South Medford coach Andrea Wegner said. "Weve got a lot of games left, but obviously the best scenario would have been to get two wins before Christmas. Well just have to jump back on the horse and get going again." Ashland led 46-27 going into the fourth quarter. "We played better defense and were quicker on our feet in the second half," Woods said. "I think a lot of people are going to take us for granted this year. But well show them." ASHLAND (62) Huyett 7, Seltzer 6, Hargis 2, Gooch 6, Woods 28, Morin 9, Kalemkeris 4, Fascilla 0.
