"Born Into Brothels" is one of five films in the documentary film category for Hollywood’s annual awards gala. In addition to its Oscar nod, "Born Into Brothels" recently edged out Michael Moore’s "Fahrenheit 9/11" for the L.A. Film Critics’ Best Documentary Award. Directed and narrated by Zana Briski, the film is about children of prostitutes in the red-light district of Calcutta, India, fighting for a better life. Briski has said she will visit Ashland for the AIFF when it returns for its fourth year March 31 to April 4. "She’s not a filmmaker who said, ‘Hey, let’s make a film,’ " says AIFF Director Tom Olbrich. "She’s a photographer who went to live there for years, then decided to take a filmmaker back to the story she lived." Advertisement Olbrich met Briski at a recent film festival in Bend, where the picture won the audience choice award. The AIFF also announced Tuesday that a film by Jim Taylor, co-writer of the current hit movie "Sideways," will be featured at this year’s event. Taylor wrote, directed and produced the film "Lost Cause." Along with director Alexander Payne, Taylor has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for the quirky "Sideways." Briski and co-director Ross Kauffman in their film chronicle the transformation in the lives of prostitutes’ children living with poverty and despair after Briski gives them cameras and lessons in their use. Photographs taken by the children will be on display at Houston’s Custom Framing and Fine Art in Ashland during the film festival. "Born into Brothels" won the Human Rights Watch 2004 Nestor Almendros Prize For Courage In Filmmaking, and The International Documentary Association Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award. It will not face "Fahrenheit 9/11" in the Oscar race because that film is entered in the Best Picture category. Visit www.kids-with-cameras.org/bornintobrothels . Olbrich says the AIFF decided to reveal the two selections when both earned Oscar nominations. The final 85 2005 AIFF films were chosen Sunday from a record 564 entries, but they will not be announced until mid-February after producers respond to invitations. The AIFF will hold an Academy Award viewing party at the Old Ashland Armory Feb. 27 with two 30-foot screens and sound system to match. Tickets are $10, $8 for AIFF members. The event is a fund-raiser for the AIFF. Call 488-3823. The AIFF is scheduled for the Varsity Theatre in Ashland with independent feature films, documentaries, shorts and student films. Filmmakers will be on hand at festival forums and parties, and for post-film question-and-answer sessions. Tickets go on sale to AIFF members March 14 and to the general public March 16.
