Coen leads Indians over Panthers ROSEBURG -- The Roseburg Indians knew South Medford's boys basketball team was itching to steal the Southern Oregon Conference matchup Friday night. With that in mind, Roseburg came out firing in the first quarter and calmly dropped in the shots when needed in the fourth quarter to earn a hard-fought 59-49 victory. "It was a well-played, intense game," Roseburg coach Mike Pardon said. "It was real physical where both sides battled the whole night." Roseburg (11-5, 6-1 SOC) stormed out to an 18-11 lead in the first quarter, only to have South rally to make the score 37-34 heading into the final period. Instead of breaking under the pressure, the Indians regrouped by knocking down a couple field goals and then closing the Panthers out with a 10-for-13 effort from the free-throw line in the fourth. "They came after us in the last four minutes and tried to put us (at the foul line) and our kids did a good job knocking them down," said Pardon. Roseburg's Brad Coen drained four of his team's eight 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 18 points. Joe Newton added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians, while Ole Sheldon had 10 points. "If you look at us, we've gotten good balance throughout the season," said Pardon. "We've had different guys step up every night and Brad did a good job for us tonight." South Medford (9-7, 4-3 SOC) continued its struggles from the field, converting 19 of 59 shots for the contest. Steve Hilgendorf and Nick Decker each had nine points to lead the Panthers. EAGLE POINT 39, ASHLAND 35 -- At Ashland, Kris Pavilionis had his game-tying shot roll off the rim with five seconds to play as Eagle Point escaped with a road win in SOC play. Nick Rouhier had 18 points and Jake Kleker added eight for the Eagles, who took an early lead with an 18-10 surge in the first quarter. Trailing 31-19 at halftime, the Grizzlies roared back behind an intense defensive effort, limiting Eagle Point to four points in the third and fourth quarters. Brett Zundel had nine points and nine rebounds to lead Ashland (5-12, 1-6 SOC), while Ryan Beugli added seven points and seven rebounds. Eagle Point improved to 4-3 in SOC play. By beating the Pelicans, the Cavemen remained in a tie with Roseburg for first place in the Southern Oregon Conference. Sophomore guard Bryant Minor had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavemen, while 6-foot-7 junior Ian Elseth led all scorers with 17 points.
