William Hernan-Barrera, 27, was being held late Saturday in the Jackson County Jail on felony charges of second-degree assault and possession of a controlled substance, Medford police Sgt. Chad Teresi reported in a news release. Bail was set at $1,005,000. Police had searched for a man named Wilman Hernandez-Villatoro in connection with the incident at a home in the 300 block of South Columbus Avenue. Teresi said investigators learned after the arrest the suspect’s true name is William Hernan-Barrera. At about 7:50 p.m. Monday, police went to the emergency room at Rogue Valley Medical Center to speak with a man who suffered a 4- to 5-inch-long wound after being slashed with a 24-inch sword. The victim reported he had been attacked after arguing over a broken remote control. The victim was released after receiving treatment. Hernan-Barrera has been convicted of second-degree burglary and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in Washington, according to Medford police. He is wanted there for failure to report to his probation officer.
