Robert Lee Custer, 23, of Oakland, Calif., is held in the Jackson County Jail on a charge of first-degree robbery. His bail is set at $1 million. The alleged robbery took place around 3 p.m. Wednesday at a parking lot in the 800 block of Ellendale Drive, Medford police said. Custer allegedly was buying about 10 pounds of cannabis from a 28-year-old man when he pointed a handgun at the seller, swiped the drugs and fled in a silver Scion Cube with two other people, police said. "I think he actually touched the chest of the other with the gun," Medford police Detective Sgt. Brent Mak said. "He got right up in his face." Police declined to release the 28-year-old man's name, as he has not yet been charged with any crime, despite the sale. No injuries were reported. "Everything is being forwarded to the District Attorney's Office," Mak said. "(They) could ultimately end up charging him." Minutes after the robbery, a police officer spotted the Scion near the intersection of Main Street and Riverside Avenue. The suspects matched the descriptions given out by the victim, police said. Because one of the suspects allegedly was armed, police conducted what they called a high-risk traffic stop. "It's basically ordering people out at gunpoint. We are not just going to walk up on that car," Mak said. Custer and the other occupants got out of the car one at a time and were taken into custody. Police said the two other men in the car, believed to be local, were interviewed and released. Police said after searching the car they found 10 pounds of marijuana and a handgun, which had been reported stolen out of Mississippi. Police said they think a conservative estimate for the drugs' value is about $30,000. "It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out," Mak said.
