PUBLIC SAFETY Red Cross to install free smoke alarms in Medford Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 10, 2015 at 4:46 PM Updated Sep 10, 2015 at 7:05 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 10, 2015 at 4:46 PM Updated Sep 10, 2015 at 7:05 PM » Social News If you live in Medford and don't have working smoke alarms in your home, you can rectify that for free Saturday. The American Red Cross will be canvassing neighborhoods from 12:30 to 6 p.m., looking for homes that lack smoke alarms and installing them at no charge. Medford residents can also schedule an appointment during that period by calling 503-528-5783, emailing [email protected] , or visiting www.redcross.org/cascadeshfpc online. Volunteers also will review fire safety, go over a checklist for identifying home hazards and provide information about creating a fire escape plan and preparing for other emergencies. The Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office provides the smoke alarms for Oregon and budget for them every biennium, according to spokesman Rich Hoover. "They will give us as many as we need," said Red Cross Cascades Region communications director Paula Negele. It's part of the American Red Cross's Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, a national program with a goal of reducing injury and death rates due to house fires by about 25 percent over five years. Since June 30, volunteers from the agency's Cascades Region have helped install about 1,500 smoke alarms in more than 600 homes across the state, and in six counties in southwest Washington. Close to home, volunteers already have canvassed neighborhoods in Roseburg, Brookings and Grants Pass. Program officials say the Red Cross responded to 60,000 home fires nationwide in 2014. In a news release, they reported 60 percent of fire-related deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Red Cross responds to an average of two house fires a day in the Cascades Region.
