Miss Monica looked so different from the first pictures you printed from the Jackson County Jail, and her makeup was pretty remarkable. Who was responsible for her makeup? — J.J., email submission You and your's, J.J., were not the only ones to notice the transformation of Susan Monica from her January 2014 arrest to the start of her trial last week. Some of what you saw, and didn't see, had to do with her incarceration in the Jackson County Jail and some of it was the work of a local makeup artist. When Monica was first lodged in jail, she was 64 years old and bald, standing 5 feet 11 inches all and weighing 260 pounds, according to her jail records. In the ensuing 15 months, she lost an enormous amount of weight, likely in part due to the jail food that she complained about in letters to the Mail Tribune. Throughout her earlier court appearances, Monica wore a long brownish wig. But her appearance changed dramatically when she started appearing before prospective jurors on April 13. Defense attorney Christine Herbert arranged for Monica to get a new, shorter wig as well as dresses, skirts and blouses for the trial, Herbert says. But the main change many readers noticed in her appearance was her makeup. Herbert says a local makeup artist came to the jail at 7:30 a.m. each day to do up Monica for court, which typically began at 9 a.m. The artist, who didn't want to be identified, charged $55 per session, Herbert says. "She was amazing," Herbert says. "She did it with a smile and was happy to do it." Monica was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison after a jury unanimously convicted her Tuesday on two counts each of murder and abuse of a corpse for the shooting deaths and dismembering of two men at her Wimer farm.
