Michels Corp. of Wisconsin was the low bidder, with Instituform of Missiouri coming in at $731,387.10. Michels will begin installing polyester liners inside about two miles of pipes to seal them up, and, according to Michels website, the liners are supposed to be good for 50 years. Work on the project should be completed in May. Some of the streets where the liner will be installed include Jackson Street, Queen Anne Drive, Eighth Street, Grape Street, Willamette Avenue, Hawthorne Street, Bartlett Street and Oakdale Avenue. Both concrete and clay pipes will be sealed as part of the project. The liners that are installed with machines and a resin substance cures inside the pipes, which range in size from 6 to 24 inches. Michels says the trenchless repair costs 20 to 40 percent less than installation of new pipes. The company has installed more than 4 million feet of liner in municipal sewer and water pipelines. Existing lines are first hydraulically cleaned to get rid of root systems and other debris, and the company sends in a remote camera to examine the pipes. The polyester liner is treated with a resin-type structure that essentially creates a pipe within a pipe, sealing up any cracks or holes. After the work is done, Michels inspects the lines to make sure all the cracks and holes are filled in. —Reach reporter Damian Mann at 541-776-4476 or [email protected] .
