The senior... » Read more X HOW TO HELP The Medford School District needs about 175 more volunteers to judge senior presentations Thursday and Friday, May 28-29, at North and South Medford high schools. The senior presentation is the fourth and final step of students’ senior projects, which also include a project, portfolio and research paper. This year, North students will present on topics ranging from testing conditions and habits to stage makeup, while South students will present on topics ranging from adoption to string theory. As of Wednesday afternoon, NMHS needed 43 more judges to observe presentations Thursday and 49 more judges for Friday. SMHS needed 39 more judges for Thursday and 43 more judges for Friday. “At this point, we've reached out to all the past judges, so that’s why we need some new eyes,” said Chris Kline, volunteer coordinator for Junior Achievement of Jackson and Josephine Counties. Volunteers can sign up for more than one day, Kline said. Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. both days, and presentations run from about 12:45 to 3:30 p.m. No preparation or experience is required, and refreshments will be provided by the schools’ culinary classes. Past volunteers have said they find the opportunity tremendously rewarding and a great way to connect with the younger generation and find out what’s important to them, Kline said. Volunteers will be grouped in panels of four to five judges, including one school staff member, and will be asked to grade students on their presentation skills, commitment level, appearance and a variety of other factors, explained Deanna Wilson, district director of Junior Achievement. “Judges really just need to be willing and open to listen to students and provide encouragement and feedback,” she said. Volunteers can register to help at http://vols.pt/V8T9Cn or by calling Kline at 541-842-3921. » Social News Last fall, South Medford High School seniors Travis Mobley, Angel Montelongo, Terran Chase and Rene Cabrera had to dress for soccer games in a storage shed near the field. But this fall, the varsity soccer teams will enjoy a more suitable situation, thanks to the hard work of these seniors and the generosity of several businesses and community members. For their senior project, Mobley, Montelongo, Chase and Cabrera cleaned out and organized the shed, which Mobley compared to a “dirty garage,” and turned it into a locker room. Simple as it may sound, the project actually took the four boys about 140 hours and included coming up with a design, getting permission from several administrators, writing a letter to local businesses for donations, pitching the idea to local lumberyards and hardware stores and, finally, making and installing 22 lockers. Under the guidance of their mentor and assistant soccer coach Mike Calhoun and local carpenter Augustin Ybarra, the boys built the lockers using donated materials and borrowed tools. As of Wednesday, the only thing left to do was roll out some turf, which required professional assistance. Last fall, Calhoun suggested the project, but when the boys jumped on it, he doubted whether they realized how much work it was going to take. “My initial reaction was I didn't think it was going to happen,” said Calhoun, Jackson County Fire District No. 3 battalion chief. “But now that it’s done, I couldn't be more proud of them for their perseverance, time management and planning.” During the process, the boys learned diligence, leadership and how to use tact when speaking with adults, he said. “And how to use power tools,” Montelongo chimed in. “The chalk line thing blows your mind,” Mobley added. As part of their senior project, each of the boys also had to write a six- to 10-page research paper, create a portfolio and, later this month, will deliver an eight- to 10-minute presentation. Although they collaborated on the project, Mobley, Montelongo, Chase and Cabrera wrote their papers on very different topics related to the project. Mobley wrote about performance-enhancing drugs, more specifically their effects on the body and their use by professional and high school athletes. Montelongo focused on the World Cup and its impact on the host country’s economy. On one side, the tournament increases tourism and reduces the crime rate, but on the other side, it takes money away from other services that the country could be providing, Montelongo explained. Chase, who aspires to go into construction like his dad, looked at how the construction industry has changed over time and affected the environment and economy. And, in his paper and presentation, Cabrera related his vision for the locker room to the American dream as seen in the life of Jay Gatsby and his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, “The Great Gatsby,” which Cabrera read this year in his Advanced Placement literature class. All four boys will present their individual presentations either May 28 or May 29 to a panel of volunteer and school judges. In the end, they all said they were satisfied and even surprised with how well the lockers turned out.
