Local media personality Holman dies Phil Holman, a comic radio and television personality in the Rogue Valley during much of the 1960s and '70s, died Friday in Medford at the age of 79. A memorial service is planned for 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Emek Shalom in Ashland. Holman worked in broadcasting in San Francisco and Los Angeles before coming to Medford in 1959. He worked for KDOV, KSHA, KYJC and several other radio stations during his career. He hosted the late-night weekend TV show, "Phil's Philms," which featured movies with comedy segments during the breaks. Prior to his move to Oregon, he was known for his antics in the San Francisco Bay Area. He became known as "Holman the Poleman" when he broadcast a radio show from the top of a flagpole in San Francisco. He also conducted a show while seated in a trapeze-type rig swinging out over a three-story building. In addition to broadcasting, Holman also worked as an advertising consultant, artist and writer in the Rogue Valley. In 1964, he served as moderator of a softball game at Miles Field between the Bellicose Broadcasters and the Rogue Valley Maids. He enjoyed jazz and played the jazz harmonica. He also enjoyed tennis and golf. He was born March 14, 1922, in Galveston, Texas. On Feb. 21, 1951, in San Francisco, he married Margaret "Marge" Miller, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Marshall, Medford; two daughters, Michelle Holman, Deadwood, and Tracy Donaldson, Eugene; a sister, Gertrude Holzman, San Jose, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
