Table Rocks hikes Saturday, May 7: 9 a.m., Lower Table Rock, "Fire on the Rocks!" Jena Volpe, BLM fire ecologist, and Lyndia Hammer, restoration ecologist with Lomakatsi Restoration Project, will explore the diversity of vegetation types and their relationship with fire. See examples of recent restoration work in scrublands, oak savannas and woodlands and learn how this work might influence future fire relationships. Entomologist Peter Schroeder will lead a hike to observe and discuss butterflies and other insects that live on or flutter by the Table Rocks. BLM wildlife biologists Tony Kerwin and Steve Godwin will lead a hike to look for creatures and listen to sounds of the night from dusk ’til dark on a jaunt around the half-mile, accessible Lower Table Rock Loop Trail. Godwin will attempt to lure pygmy, great horned and screech owls. A short presentation of the common bats, owls and other animals active at night in this area and their unique characteristics and adaptations will precede the hike. Bee Girl, will talk about pollination during a family-friendly hike devoted to the birds and the bees and their relationship with the wildflowers and trees that produce a rainbow of colors on the Table Rocks. Soda Mountain Wilderness Council hikes Saturday, May 7: Southern Oregon University aquatic biologist Michael Parker will lead a very challenging, 4-mile round-trip hike along the flat Jenny Creek Rim in Oregon (elevation 3,300 feet) and then very steeply down to Jenny Creek Falls (elevation 2,700 feet) in California just south of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. The hike down to the falls and back is more like a mountain climb scramble. Quite difficult. Email [email protected] to sign up and learn the 8:30 a.m. meeting point in Ashland, and get more info. Sunday, May 15: Jay Lininger, senior scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity, will lead a hike around the Canyon Ridge (elevation 4,400 feet) and Big Craggies area east of Ashland, which includes impressive views west across the upper Bear Creek Valley and east to Table Mountain from this botanically interesting, obscure mixed-conifer and oak-savannah area. Rogue Valley Walkers Saturday, May 14: , 10K Old Medford Art in Bloom walk. Meet at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot of Food- 4 Less on Biddle Road. The gathering spot is near the Quality Inn. Southern Oregon Land Conservancy hikes These free hikes may fill quickly, but SOLC encourages people to get on the waiting list, because cancellations are common. Sunday, May 8: This hike to the city of Ashland’s Imperatrice property, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be a longer and more strenuous hike than the April visit, and the group will visit the oak woodland on the ridge. Saturday, May 14: Rogue River Preserve natural history, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Naturalist Dave Garcia will lead a hike on this property north of Eagle Point. This hike will visit the property's northern river access point. Sunday, May 15: Oredson-Todd Woods ecology, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oredson-Todd Woods is a forested community gem above Ashland. Forest ecologist Tom Atzet will lead a hike in this conserved Ashland city park and share the ecology of the woods. Lithia Park nature walks Through September: Each Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m., trained naturalists from Ashland Parks and Recreation will lead an easy 90-minute nature walk through Lithia Park, rain or shine. The free walks touch on trees, flowers, birds, climate, water, geology and history of the park. Meet at the park entrance across from the Plaza in Ashland. No reservations required. Siskiyou Velo Club Every Saturday: Velo Melo meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph. No one will be dropped. Call Ginny Jensen at 541-488-1398. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Velo Slo-Mo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 7 to 10 mph over 12 to 18 miles on mostly flat terrain. Call Ken Kelley at 541-857-6819. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Crank It Up rides begin at various morning hours from different locations; 20 to 30 miles. Pace 12 to 15 mph, varied terrain. No one will be dropped.
