Sturgell makes dramatic return to the mat TACOMA, Wash. � Just four weeks removed from arthroscopic knee surgery, Southern Oregon University wrestler Dan Sturgell made an impressive title run Saturday in the PLU Roy Gonzales Open. It was the first tournament for Sturgell, who won the 184-pound crown, since he was sidelined Dec. 2. He defeated Jeremy Wilson of Portland State, 12-3. Sturgell, who last year finished third in the NAIA national tournament, beat Wilson for the third time this year. Devin Cole won SOU�s only other championship, dominating the 285-pound division. He pinned Anthony Hamilton, competing unattached, in the finals. "I think he wrestled only about five minutes the whole tournament," said Raider coach Mike Ritchey, who then joked, "He�s getting too light. We didn�t want to burn too much weight off him." The Raiders got seconds out of Brian Wilson (165), Ryan Schumann (174) and Devin Parks (197) and a third out of John Sills (165). There were no team scores kept, but the Raiders� eight placers were the most of any team, as were their five finalists. "It was a good overall tournament for us," said SOU coach Mike Ritchey. "You always like to get as many champions as you can, but we walked away feeling pretty good." Wilson, a redshirt freshman, and Sills, a true freshman, became the latest Raiders to qualify for the national tournament. Two other SOU athletes, Nolan Harris at 125 and Lee Ottow at 133, made it to the third-place match before losing. Women�s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 59, WARNER PACIFIC 53 � At Portland, Southern Oregon University enjoyed its finest rebounding effort of the season and defeated Warner Pacific 59-53 Saturday in women�s college basketball. The Raiders improved their Cascade Conference-leading record to 4-0 entering a pivotal contest Friday at Albertson College of Caldwell, Idaho. Southern Oregon is 7-9 overall. Warner Pacific is now 10-4, 2-1 in conference. "We didn�t play our best game, but we did the things we needed to to come out with a win," said Raiders coach Shirley Huyett. One of those things was coming big on the boards. The other was hitting free throws. "That was the difference in the game," said Huyett of the two phases that helped overcome poor shooting from the field. The Raiders outrebounded the Warriors 54-32 for a season high in that category. Southern Oregon also was steady at the free-throw line, making 16 of 20. Melissa Core, a 5-foot-10 junior wing, had a hand in both areas. She was one of four Raiders with eight rebounds, and she made all 11 of her free throws. Core scored a team-high 15 points. The other SOU players to pull down eight boards were Ali Richards, Jaime Stanford and Emily Wiley. The Raiders led by three, 27-24, at halftime, and the game was tied at 40-40 before an SOU run gave it some breathing room. Men�s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 70, CONCORDIA 64 � At Portland, junior forward Matt Zosel was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and scored 17 points as Southern Oregon improved to 3-1 in Cascade Conference action. SOU�s Tom Chipps came off the bench to match Zosel for game-high scoring honors, while junior guard Hamilton Barnes had eight assists. The Raiders shot 54 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the second half.
