Bundy says armed group going through government files ... Finally getting his dues By DON HUNT,Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By DON HUNT,Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 23, 2004 at 2:00 AM Updated Feb 16, 2011 at 9:46 AM By DON HUNT,Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 23, 2004 at 2:00 AM Updated Feb 16, 2011 at 9:46 AM » Social News After getting overlooked in the all-conference voting, Jeremy Stahler receives an invite to the Les Schwab Bowl Jeremy Stahler admits he was disappointed when the Southern Oregon Conference all-star football team was announced last November. A two-year starter at center, the 6-foot, 220-pound senior felt he deserved first-team accolades, but was beaten out for the honor by North Medford sophomore standout Johnny Vaigafa. Not that Stahler was a stranger to getting overlooked. During South Medford's state playoff run in 2002, he was the Panthers' most consistent offensive lineman while unfailingly snapping the ball to quarterback Boomer Marshall when the Panthers were in shotgun formation. Of the more than 300 long snaps that Stahler attempted that season, only one failed to connect. But when each game ended, the media routinely sought out Marshall and ignored Stahler. — Stahler finally received some long overdue recognition last week when he was named to the South squad of the Les Schwab Oregon Bowl. The all-star game, once known as the North-South Shrine Game, matches many of the top graduating seniors from Oregon. It is set to kick off June 26 at 7 p.m. at Portland's PGE Park. Joining Stahler on the South squad will be four members of North Medford's state runner-up team: defensive tackle David Faaeteete, quarterback Beau Hovland, linebacker Brian Jimenez and defensive back Trent Driskell. Other representatives from the SOC are Ashland wide receiver David Morris, Grants Pass offensive guard Ryan Hoefer and Roseburg offensive tackle Steve Jorgensen. Black Tornado head coach John Beck will function as the South squad's head coach and Mike Schaan, the Tornado's offensive line coach, will fill that role for the all-star team. This comes as a huge surprise, Stahler says. My coach (Bill Singler) told me that I'd been nominated, but I didn't think I'd get chosen. Stahler credits former South Medford line coach Greg Baker with teaching him the intricacies of line play. He knew the fundamentals and he'd get in the trenches himself and hit with you, Stahler says. Plus, he was our friend. You could talk to him about your problems. Singler calls Stahler one of his steadiest and headiest offensive linemen he's had since taking over at South Medford in 1998. Jeremy perfected the shotgun snap and he turned into a terrific pass blocker, Singler says. He's quick, has good feet and he's smart. He's one of those unsung guys that you don't hear much about, but to be successful you need guys like Jeremy. The Tornado players, meanwhile, see the Oregon Bowl as an opportunity to atone for the state championship game, where they lost 18-7 to Tigard. We've got a bone to pick with some of those guys up there, says Jiminez, who recently signed with Southern Oregon University. We've definitely got some payback on our minds. Each of the two all-star teams is required to represent a minimum of 22 schools and no less than eight players from conferences they represent. The state champion and runner-up teams can choose four players each. Because of the restrictions, some of the better players get left off, Beck says, citing Crater wingback Dan Whitehead, Klamath Union running back Sean Anderson and South Medford wide receiver Ryan Nuenschwander as examples. Still, Beck says, This is a great opportunity to showcase a good share of the best high school football players in the state. Players from both teams will report to Lewis & Clark College on June 20 and partake in daily doubles the week leading up to the game.
