Gorne to leave post at SOU ASHLAND � Ivan Gorne, vice president for student affairs at Southern Oregon University, will leave in July for a similar post at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash. Gorne, 53, leaves the post after three years. Phil Campbell, director of auxiliaries under Gorne, will postpone his July retirement to handle Gorne�s job until a replacement takes over at the first of the year, said SOU Interim President Sara Hopkins-Powell. The move to the Seattle area will allow Gorne to be near his grown children, help his career and receive about a 10 percent pay increase, he said. "In my career plan, it�s more advantageous to be in Washington. I�d like the option of eventually moving on to the college president level, and there�s more opportunity to do that in a two-year college than in a four-year right now. We also really miss our children. It�s a real tug on the heartstrings." Gorne and his wife, Marsha, have a son studying music at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., and a daughter practicing law in Bellevue, Wash., he said. At Highline, Gorne will oversee registration, financial aid, counseling, the student union, food services, athletics and student activities. At SOU, Gorne said he worked with a "dream team" (his staff and the school�s executive council) to achieve goals of bolstering recruitment and retention of students, setting up mandatory orientation for new students and creating a marketing and public relations department. Hopkins-Powell called Gorne "a true friend and colleague" and "a consummate team player" who always put student learning first. Gorne came to SOU from four years as assistant director of career planning and placement at Central Washington University and 20 years as director of student programs, associate dean of students and assistant to the president for governmental relations at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash. Gorne earned his bachelor�s and master�s degrees from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and his law degree from Seattle University.
