Jack Paul James Avila, 43, pleaded guilty Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court to three counts of first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Barnack sentenced Avila to 40 months in prison, three years of post-prison supervision and lifetime sex offender registration. Avila was arrested during a statewide child pornography sweep called Operation Internet Angel in October 2011. An already registered sex offender on parole for a previous conviction of sexually abusing a child, Avila was asked to submit to a parole search of his electronic items, investigators said. During the search the task force discovered evidence that Avila possessed and distributed images that showed the sexual abuse of prepubescent children. He was jailed at that time and held during the investigation. Avila was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on Dec. 15 on charges of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first and second degree, police said. The images located on Avila's digital device were downloaded from the Internet and there was no evidence to suggest he had any images of local children, police said.
