Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 29, 2006 Shipley’s shooting propels Challengers Basketball Roundup Andrew Shipley continued his hot shooting for Cascade Christian in a key Southern Cascade League boys basketball game Saturday at The Pavilion. The junior guard helped the Challengers jump out to an early lead as Cascade Christian held off the Honkers in the second half for a 70-64 victory. The Challenger (14-5, 6-2 SCL) victory breaks a three-way tie for second place in the SCL with Lakeview (13-4, 5-3 SCL) and idle St. Mary’s (12-4, 5-2 SCL), whose game against Chiloquin was postponed. "We came out on fire in the first 10 minutes of the game," Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. "We hit 15 of our first 19 shots and were up by 19." Shipley jump-started the Challengers’ attack by bagging all four of his 3-pointers in that 10-minute span. Shipley scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half. "The key thing for (Shipley) is he’s starting to knock down his open shots," said Morse. Advertisement Over the past four games, Shipley has averaged almost 23 points a game and has connected on 21 treys. Lakeview closed out the first half on a 15-3 run to cut it’s deficit to 39-32 at halftime. "We couldn’t hit anything, turned the ball over and they got the momentum," said Morse about his team’s play during the Honkers’ spurt in the second quarter. Cascade Christian took charge early in the second half and built its margin back to 12 points. But again Lakeview rallied and cut the Challengers’ lead to 58-54. Then Lakeview senior Clint Hopper, who had a game-high 20 points, was called for an offensive charge and fouled out with 2:44 left. The closest Lakeview could get from there was 60-57 with 1:55 to go, but Josh Heidegger sank two free throws and Josh Smith hit a breakaway layup to build the lead to seven points. Heidegger and Shipley were perfect from the line in the fourth quarter, connecting on all 10 free throws between them. "It was highly unlikely for us to make that many free throws down the stretch," said Morse. Heidegger matched Shipley for team-high scoring honors with 18 points. The junior forward added 10 rebounds and six assists. "(Heidegger) played under control and got some huge rebounds when we needed them" said Morse. Girls CASCADE CHRISTIAN 62, LAKEVIEW 45 — Katie O’Brien scored 18 points and Melissa Gmur added 17 points, five rebounds and seven steals to lead Cascade Christian to the SCL victory. The Challengers (15-4, 7-1 SCL) managed a 27-21 lead at halftime and sealed the victory with a 10-point edge in the fourth quarter. Key to the win was Cascade’s shooting from the foul line, with O’Brien going 11-for-14 and Sarah Brown 7-for-10. The Challengers were 29-for-47 overall (62 percent). Brown also had five rebounds and four assists, while Amanda Duchien had four blocked shots. Kelsie Flynn had 16 points and Christine Totten 14 to pace Lakeview (13-4, 5-3). LAKEVIEW (45) — Kel.
