So well, in fact, that tribute band The Security Project is set to release an album, "Live 1," later in May that covers his early progressive rock. The Security Project — drummer Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel), touch guitarist Trey Gunn (King Crimson), guitarist Michael Cozzi (Shriekback), David Jameson on keys and Eigenharp (Beyond the Wall) and lead vocalist Brian Cummins (Carpet Crawlers, Mick Pointer's Marillion) — started performing 2012 in recognition of the 30th anniversary of Gabriel's 1982 album "Security." “This material is ridiculously special," says Gunn in a press release. "Of course, Peter is a special artist. But the material on his first few records, especially the third and fourth ones, has no peer. We bring the same level of precision to the arrangements." On "Live 1," Seattle-based Gunn and the others harness the core of such songs as "I Don't Remember," "No Self Control," "Intruder," "Games Without Frontiers" and "Biko" from Gabriel's 1980 "Melt," and "Lay Your Hands On Me," "The Family & Fishing Net," "I Have the Touch," "The Rhythm of the Heat" and "San Jacinto" from "Security," along with "Here Comes the Flood" from "Peter Gabriel 1" or "Car" in 1977 and "Back in N.Y.C.," a revival of a Genesis song from its "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" album. The Security Project will perform Sunday, May 22, at the historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased online at liveatthearmory.com . Tickets will be $30 at the door. Roots rock band L.E.F.T. — Bret Levick on guitars and vocals, Bob Evoniuk on Dobro, Greg Frederick on bass, Matt Terreri on drums and Don Harriss on keys — will open the show. Behind its new album, The Security Project is touring the West Coast between Seattle and San Diego, with stops in Ashland and Eugene. "Live 1" will be released on Gunn's 7d Media label and distributed worldwide. It was recorded live in 2015 when the band toured Europe. "Live 1" is available at https://securityproject.bandcamp.com/album/live-1. Drummer Marotta worked with Gabriel from 1977 to the mid to late '80s, he says during a telephone conversation. He sings the lead vocals on "Back in N.Y.C." on "Live 1." "I started touring with Peter after he released his first solo record," Marotta says. "He had a studio band — including guitarist Robert Fripp of King Crimson — record the first one. They did a short promotional tour, then went their separate ways. Bass player Tony Levin and keyboard player Larry Fast remained, but that's when Peter needed a guitar player and a drummer. I was fortunate to get that call." Marotta played on Gabriel's second, third and fourth albums. Gabriel put together a different band 1986 when he went mainstream with "So." "That was the end of my time and Fast's time with Peter," Marotta says. " 'So' was a different kind of record." "So" is Gabriel's most commercially successful album. It is certified triple platinum in the U.K. and five times platinum in the U.S. Its biggest hit, "Sledgehammer," won nine awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards. "There's still a real love for the music Peter was making before he became mainstream," Marotta says. "We want to spotlight that early music, especially music from the record 'Security.' When we started, we had no idea we were taking Peter's music to a new level. I’m proud that we’re able to deliver the deepest of those songs with real conviction.” Gabriel founded English rock band Genesis in 1967 with fellow schoolmates Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Chris Stewart. He moved to a solo career in 1975. His first two solo albums are "Car" and "Scratch," in reference to the artwork on their covers. After agreeing to use distinctive titles, Gabriel used two-letter words for his following albums, "So," "Us" and "Up."
