Thomas� trey at buzzer lifts South With one flick of the wrist, South Medford�s Kellie Thomas turned a miserable night into a golden moment for the South Medford High girls basketball team. Thomas drilled a 3-point basket at the buzzer to lift the Panthers to a stunning 46-44 victory over Grants Pass at South High. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Panthers (14-7 overall, 9-3 SOC), who can lock up second place in the Southern Oregon Conference and a home berth in the state playoffs with a win over North Medford on Friday. "I saw the seconds ticking down and I knew I had to get the shot off," Thomas said. "Then everything went blank for a second until the ball swished through. "It all happened so fast." Thomas finished with 21 points for the second straight game and is now within 17 points of South Medford career scoring leader Emily Barker. The hard-luck Cavers led 14-10 after one period, 26-24 at halftime and 37-28 after three quarters, and things only got worse for South Medford in the early part of the fourth. With three minutes remaining in the game, Grants Pass led 41-30 and seemed destined to pull off the upset. But the Cavers went to a delay game and it backfired into turnovers and missed free throws. "We really picked up our defense those last three minutes," South Medford coach Andrea Wegner said. "Our kids played with a lot of intensity when it counted, but we dodged a huge bullet." Emily Perttu, who scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth period, hit a driving layup that tied the game with 30 seconds remaining. But Alison Klingel hit a free throw with 8.5 seconds to go that gave the Cavers a 44-43 advantage. With starting point guard Whitney Grant on the bench with five fouls, Perttu took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the court to the right baseline. She passed the ball to Thomas at the top of the key, who then nailed the game-winner. Grant had six points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists before fouling out. ROSEBURG 68, NORTH MEDFORD 49 � At Roseburg, Lindsey Heard scored 17 points and Sarah Gilding added 16 as Roseburg took advantage of 17 North Medford turnovers in the first half. A 15-2 second-quarter splurge gave Roseburg a 13-point halftime lead. The Black Tornado trimmed the deficit to eight early in the third period but Roseburg pulled away once again with an 8-0 burst. Gilding added 13 rebounds, while Shannon Burmeister scored 11 points as the Indians (11-12, 6-6 SOC) sank 16 of 18 from the foul line. Ashley Nelson scored 17 points for North (6-16, 3-9 SOC) and Kara Hwang added 15. The Pelicans had two chances to tie the game in the final minute of play, but 3-point attempts by Megan Leppert and Sam Gilbert missed their mark. Sarah Pool then drained two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to seal the victory for the Comets. Senior Lindsay Huyett led the way for the Grizzlies (14-8, 7-5 SOC), scoring 20 points including four 3-pointers. Grizzly senior Jackie Woods chipped in with 11 points and eight boards. The Eagles (5-16, 1-11 SOC) were led by Danielle Rouhier and Ashlie Winner who each posted nine points. Klamath Union took charge in the extra session and pulled away from the Comets, who committed 30 turnovers and left the door open by making only 2 of 4 free-throw attempts in the final 30 seconds of regulation. The Comets (7-13, 3-7 SOC) had a couple chances to tie or win the game in overtime go awry. Crater missed a shot in the final seconds but grabbed the rebound and called for a timeout to regroup. A last-second shot was never hoisted, however, as the ball was dribbled out of bounds on the ensuing possession. Jason Mortenson had 16 points to pace the Pelicans (7-11, 4-6 SOC), while Baker had 11. Andrew Norum led Crater with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Andy Haas had 14 points and Steve Darnell 13.
