Moran received 617 write-in votes to win the Democratic nomination for state House District 6, according to the Jackson County Clerk's Office. "I was really pleased and thankful for the hard work of the people who gave time and energy, kind of a last-minute draft effort by the local Democrats," Moran said. "Being a last-minute operation, it was a really good outcome." No one filed for the Democratic primary, leaving Rep. Sal Esquivel (R-Medford) unchallenged. Esquivel, who ran against Moran in 2006, welcomed his former challenger back to the race. "Mike's a good guy," Esquivel said. Moran said he will focus on public safety, education and transportation. Esquivel said one of his key issues is the economy, including easing regulations on small businesses and reducing taxation. Moran had considered filing for the House seat before the primary. But he decided against it, because he was preparing to retire after serving as Talent police's chief for eight years — 40 years total in law enforcement — and was trying to get his successor, Chief Curtis Whipple, up to speed. His tenure as an officer included 29 years with the Medford Police Department. The Jackson County Democratic Party reached out to Moran after his April retirement and asked him to consider a run. Moran agreed to run if the write-in votes materialized. The Oregon Secretary of State's Office still has to certify the votes and formally ask Moran whether he will accept the nomination, which Moran said he plans to do. Molly Woon, Secretary of State communications director, said letters must be sent to write-in candidates by June 13, and the candidates must respond by June 21. With summer rolling in, Moran said, he isn't up to full speed yet, but he is getting started on the campaign. "There's a lot of foundation work that needs to go on to get ready," Moran said.
